The best resource for TCKs that I have ever read!

A Lewis & Clark College colleague discovered Tina Quick's book while attending the OACAC (Overseas Association for College Admission Counseling) conference this year. He loaned me the book for the weekend and I haven't given it back yet! I've ordered my own copy for the office. I love this book and feel that it is the most helpful resource for TCKs (Third Culture Kids) that I have ever read. While based on research, it is easy to read and very, very practical. TCKs will appreciate the real life experiences of their peers and will come away with good advice no matter where they open the book and start reading. After digesting the section on relationships, TCKs might actually understand why they initially have so much difficulty making US friends. This book gives students lots of good, sound, practical advice that they can use before and during their transition to university. Last week I sent an email to my new incoming first year TCKs (and their parents) suggesting that they buy the book and read it in the month before new student orientation begins. As a TCK herself and as a mother of three TCKs, Tina Quick knows her subject well and speaks with authority. But, she does so in a manner that students will enjoy.

Insightful and Practical

I wish this book was available when I, a Global Nomad, returned to my passport country and entered college! It fills an important niche that has been vacant for too long. I love Tina's style of writing for she writes clearly and gives wonderful examples for the Global Nomad making this transition. I had a difficult time putting down her book. She is most knowledgeable and has certainly done her research. The book is filled with interviews of Global Nomads and those who work or study them. I think Tina went the second mile with her writing as she ends each chapter with the key points of that chapter and where one might find more materials on that topic, etc. It is not a book filled with philosophy and research studies, but a most practical book that a university bound student can put into their backpack and understand what is going on within them. The chapter on hidden grief is the most important one in the entire book. It is the perfect companion book to David Pollock and Ruth VanReken's book "Third Culture Kids:Growing Up Among Worlds". In my role as a mental health counselor, this book will be high on my referral list to all Global Nomads and their parents.

Global Nomad's Guide to University Transition

Tina Quick's book is the book that has been missing for years from our library of books about raising and educating children overseas. In fact, it seems that "transition to college" is where all the help books and "owner's manuals" for parenting stop. However, transition to college for any student is a major life change. Couple that transition with the issues that a Third Culture Kid faces and it's no wonder that many of these young people have a very difficult time adjusting. I have been telling every one of the college-bound students I advise, their parents, and my professional college counseling colleagues about the importance of this book. And parents - if you can't get your own teen to read the book yet - read it yourself so that if he/she calls home frustrated or in tears, you'll be able to better support them!

good for some people

I have been looking for legitimate ways to make money online and got this book to help me do just that.

Some of the book was great, but there were also a lot of confusing and unorganized parts. In short, the book was all over the place.

Some of the sections were very basic and others more advanced. I'm not sure if it's for a beginner or somebody that is advanced. It doesn't really focus on one group. You'll get something out of it I'm sure, but if you're like me, only about half of it will apply to you. Because of this, I'm rating it right down the middle.

A few days before this book, I read Laptop Lifestyle - How to Quit Your Job and Make a Good Living on the Internet (Volume 1 - Quick Start Guide to Making Money Online) and was glad to have done that, since I feel it helped me to "read between the lines" with the information in this book. There were times when reading this one that I was going right along with the author, understanding what he was saying, but then he'd lose me by jumping to something else without finishing the thought. At the end, I was left with a bunch of odds and ends of a big picture but no real plan of action for making money now, with the exception of Adsense ads on a blog I have. If all the needed information to make a good living online was in this book, it wasn't organized well. He talks about blogging a lot, so perhaps this book was developed from random blog articles?

Just to give you an example of what I'm talking about, the first part of the book is a very basic section he talks about setting up a blog with Blogger. Then he talks about adding ads to make money from it. I was with him at this point and that's what I've done so far. He gives a list of banner ad companies and talks about Google Adsense and that was helpful to me. If you are not online at all, this is a good thing to read to make that happen although some of the finer details and technical terms are not explained well. If you've been doing this a long time, maybe you'll do better than me at figuring out how it all fits together, but if you've been doing it a long time, you're probably beyond a free blog on Blogger, too. I just started and am already seeing the limitations.

I enjoyed the part where he talks about "7 Types of Content" to put on blogs. For example, posts that review things, posts that interview people, "Top 10" lists, and Q&A posts. This gave me some good ideas and was the highlight of the book for me.

Then he starts to get more advanced and talks about buying articles to post on your blog, which I think is a good idea, because I'm busy. My hope of saving some time didn't last long though because when I went to the site he recommended, it appeared to be brand new, with only a few articles to purchase.

This is the kind of "back and forth" you get with this book. One minute you're following along and completely with him, then there is a detour that kind of derails the plan or at the very least confuses it. One minute he's doing something for beginners, like helping you get a free blog up, and then he spends an entire section talking about legal issues of posting testimonials.

Then he talks about passive revenue with membership sites. Then speaking. Then coaching programs. Then branding strategies. Then how to deal with PR and media people.

There is a lot of information here, but very little detailed information. If you are looking for a book that is going to guide you step-by-step to a business that makes money online, this is not it.

What this book does well is give you little ideas you can use in an existing business. The only problem there is that he jumps around to so many areas, he doesn't give the finer points of anything. I was hoping for more specifics.

Good book if your online business is blogging!

When I bought this book there wasn't too many reviews and so I relied a little on the title to sway me 'How to Run an Online Business that pays and pays'. That was what I was after and so I was hooked.

Initially I was a little disappointed, not much, but a little hence the 4 stars. I say this only because I felt the book largely centres around blogging your passion, your expertise or what interests you. Many of the tools, techniques and advice that Joel Comm discusses tie back to making money from blogging. Sure you can make money from your online business via blogging, but I just felt it was a little too one dimensional, as Joel Comm didn't look too much past this (blogging). Some online businesses are not just about blogging! Having said that Joel does discuss affiliate marketing and ways to make money from your site via membership and coaching programs but again its geared around your knowledge and doesn't touch on other online business strategies for those who may be trying to make money online via other initiatives i.e. selling products.

That said this book is easy to read and isn't overly complicated. Joel Comm delivers by providing a number of models on how to make money, most of which are geared around Google AdSense. He does though delve into AdSense discussing the importance of ad layout and formatting. At times I found I couldn't put this book down and was getting carried away with how I, someone who has never considered blogging, could maybe make a living from it. Joel Comm inspires you and makes you believe you can. I've never heard him talk, but he writes passionately, which I believe gives what he says credibility. If he believes it then I will too. Importantly he is a realist, advising making money from an online business takes time, effort in building networks and then more time. It doesn't happen overnight.

If you blog and want to make money from it, then I'm sure this book will help as many of the tips, tools and techniques suggested are clear and easy to understand. If you run an online business selling a product then I believe there are better books on internet marketing, searching engine marketing etc.

Another Great Book From Joel Comm

I received Joel Comm's new book "KaChing" from Amazon and read it from cover to cover. The book is very well organized and an easy read for anyone. I consider myself quite web savvy and I found lots of little gold nuggets in this book. The concepts he explains are driven home with case studies. This is a great book if you dream of trading in the 9-5 for web entrepreneurship or need some extra cash.

A few years ago I bought an eBook on a forum from Joel that would later become the best selling book The AdSense Code: What Google Never Told You About Making Money with AdSense. I read it and implemented his suggestions and tips not expecting the great results that I got. My AdSense income increased significantly from his suggestions. After awhile I wondered what's next? I had heard that AdSense is the tip of the iceberg in revenue generation for websites. This book answers what's next and I'm expecting the same results from implementing the suggestions in this book!

The Cruel Idea Behind Making of a Nation

No wonder why this great poet and literature genius has been awarded the Nobel Prize. Anyone who reads this book clearly gets an understanding as to how much this author has studied human mind and its social aspects that had been troubling the humanity ever since power and materialistic possessions have taken over spiritual freedom.
The book is divided into three parts- Nationalism in the West, Nationalism of Japan and Nationalism in India.
Rabindranath’s idea about a Nation is that of an evolution of a great organization of human mind, wealth, machines and power to control the minds and bodies of all that is surrounding this great artificial body. As per him, Power is a scientific product made in the political laboratory of the Nation, through the dissolution of personal humanity. As per him the West is necessary to the East and vice versa. His main target is the British (whenever he referred as Nation) rule in India and its ill effects on the moral and spiritual efficacies of the people of India. He ripped apart the cruel motives behind the industrial, economic, educational, social and political policies of Europe against all those countries it invaded and captured with main focus on how it affected India, whose history has been made across different races over centuries of suffering and learning not by material organization but by natural social cooperation and spiritual freedom.
He praises Japan and America for its different approach towards Nationalism unlike Europe. He appreciates the ideology of these Nations which imbibed power and wealth through love and admiration but not through ambition and greed. He warns the forces of Nation against the creation of politicians, soldiers, manufacturers and bureaucrats which he says shall bring down the entire gigantic organization of the Nation one day to bite the dust. That would be the day when the East would come back into its hay days and start a new history. He appeals to Japan and America to view the ideologies and histories of many countries like India which cannot be called as Nations due to their diverse coexistence of different races with respect and positive approach instead of insulting them and treating them as beggars.

The reader would be awestruck to come across such a vast expanse of usage of English verbatim in this book. I am totally perplexed by the way European organization has been constructively criticized apart by the author at the same time warning it of the detrimental effects it would have if they force upon spiritual countries like India.

The author seems to have totally targeted the European way of conquering the World through its massive Organization of military and commerce, but seems to have ignored the benefits it brought upon all those countries it went to. The benefits might be undervalued compared to the exploitation and conflicts it created in those Nations.

A book very much for our times

This Penguin reprint is important and timely. I believe that, among other things, Tagore's NATIONALISM should be thoroughly read and carefully thought about by every member of both the British Parliament and the U.S. Congress and White House. (There are also closely related things in the middle pieces of Tagore's CREATIVE UNITY and in his LETTERS TO A FRIEND.) The indictment of the nationalism developed in the West and the account of the contrasting ways in which human beings have related to each other in older civilisations of the East have the strongest application to our own times. Knowledge of them could also promote a more sympathetic understanding of current suspicion of and hostility to the West. The West has given much to the rest of the world, but Tagore shows and/or reminds us that it also owes the world the gravest apology. He himself writes at one point in the later CREATIVE UNITY that the post-WW1 move to 'internationalism' made little difference to the arrogance and greed that still governed much of the West's behaviour to the rest of the world. Those vices obviously still govern much of it now, as in the appalling invasion of Iraq. The full and proper making of that grave apology to the rest of the world could help promote worldwide peace by being the start of a more concilatory because penitent attitude in the West - to, among others, the so-called Islamic 'extremists'.

The book enlightens us about when and how the term nationalism got into use. Rabindranath Tagor explain us the dangers of commercial and political short sightedness. Nationalism in practice makes people fight against each other under the pseudo identity given by nationalism.

Book is very interested for the people who think about the society at large, worried about the fights between people under various banners, tries to find out the solution.

Book is not giving effective solution. It only makes readers to think over the issues.

excellent e-book like all elder's works

This is a very good e-book, the content is excellent and it will improve your trading performance like it happened to myself.
So far I have read 23 books about trading and I must say if I could take three of these books , two of them were written by Alexander Elder "Come into my trading rooms" and "Sell&Short".
This e-book contains a well detailed part of the previous Elder's books as it focused on divergences both for a bearish and bullish point of view but it was enriched by new examples and charts.
I think the e-book contains excellent information about the method a trader could use and why you should take part in a trade.

The only problem lies in the fact that the e-book that Amazon converted with their own file ( i mean .azw) is full of mistakes not due to the author as I had the chance to view both the version on pdf (sent by Elder) and the version bought by Amazon.
it's unbelievable how amazon could convert a pdf file into its own format. There are charts missing, there 's a table of contents with no link working, no cover page, no link working properly in the whole ebook. I think that Amazon should made a huge better work if it wants to sell e-books.
I bought the e-book on Amazon thinking I could get a version suitable for my kindle touch while I got a e-book version (with .azw file extension) with parts and charts missing. Next time I will buy right away on Elder site a pdf and then i will convert it using mobipocket into mobi format.

29 January i had been contacted by Amazon customer service. I must say I was really impressed by the effort to cope with this problem. I explained everything and they told me they would have contacted the editor in order to fix the problem.

The best of Alexander Elder

Dr Richard Bandler, the co-founder of NLP, has long convinced me of a concept: "as a technology becomes more advanced, it also becomes simpler and easier to apply" .. this concept came to my mind as I devoured the latest book of Dr Alexander Elder.

I have read several books of Dr Elder, starting with the legendary "Trading for a Living", and as time passed, the technique of Dr Alder became more focused and simple, with sharply defined trading rules.

No more complex price patterns like flags and pennants and shoulders, Dr Elder dismisses them as highly subjective and I strongly agree.

No more technical analysis using many indicators and failing to take a decision as the signals of indicators contradict each other. He suggests using a few indicators: Moving average of price + price channel + MACD + any one oscillator.

I am aware that many authors are suggesting alternative trading techniques, and I am not qualified to compare them all, what I can say for sure is that the system of Dr Elder is well defined and has worked for me as i am trading in the Egyptian stock market. This system is designed to make a trader buy slowly and very carefully, waiting with his finger on the trigger until he/she sees specific MACD and price patterns. After buying the stock, the system helps the trader to sell quickly as soon as the price reaches a predefined target. This worked for me very well, before adopting this system I often went into "paralysis by analysis" and missed buy or sell opportunities.

This latest book (47 pages) is focused on eliminating the confusion about divergence signals, the most reliable indicator-pattern according to Dr Elder. There are many examples about what is a divergence and what is not. These examples answered some questions and uncertainties that I had, and will make me more confident in my trading decisions.

One last thing, a very valuable concept that I learned from Dr Elder's books is that good book keeping and strict risk-management are the absolute most important things to succeed in stock trading, it is even more important than technical and fundamental analysis.

I strongly recommend this book + "The New Sell and Sell Short" for traders, you will not regret the time spent in studying these books.

I purchased the Kindle version of Dr. Elder's latest book - Two Roads Diverged: Trading Divergences. I am not so new to trading, but new to Dr. Elder's methodology and Triple Screen. I really enjoyed this quick read on this often misunderstood topic. To best view the charts contained in the book, I recommend using the laptop or iPad Kindle app.

The book clearly defines what a true divergence is, how to recognize a divergence, and identifies the best potential points of entries and exits. Throughout the book Dr. Elder emphasizes strict trading rules along with Mind, Method, and Money as outlined in his previous books.

After reading Two Roads Diverged: Trading Divergences, you will have a clear understanding of how to potentially utilize divergences within your trading plan. I also like the format Dr. Elder uses to reinforce the content of his books using learning reviews/quizzes to test your knowledge.

Below Expectation

I guess I was the first person who bought your book “MCSA Microsoft Windows 8.1 Complete Study Guide”, in fact I completed reading the book and I would like to give you my feedback, there is no doubt that the author has excellent knowledge in Windows 8.1 based on his experience but he failed in delivering the information to the reader, he assume the reader is mastering windows 8.1 and this book just to refresh his knowledge, also I’ve noticed that he go in more details explaining the old concepts which was used in the previous Operation System but when it comes to new technology or new features in Windows 8.1 he don’t say much and I have to go to the internet to understand because the book did not say much or in other word is not clear, finally in some chapters instead of explaining the point the author confuse the reader.

I prefer to buy Sybex books, but this is the first time to encounter difficulty with Sybex Books, overall I don’t recommend this book.

Worthless for 70-689

While the information in-general is educational, the book was nearly worthless on the 70-689 test I took today. Many of the questions had the incorrect answer in the Appendix, and some of the presented answers were laughable ("Go have a beer and give it a while - geez" was an actual potential answer in this book). Ultimately, this was a waste of money.

I was looking to take the upgrade exam from Windows 7 to Windows 8 but there really aren't any study materials for that test. This may be a better book for someone just getting into desktops but I didn't find it too useful as prep material for the upgrade exam.
