Perfect for those that are hurting, and anxious!

My Reflections:

This book is a powerful tool that will help to transform your life and grow your faith journey. In pure Anderson style you will be guided on a path to spiritual and personal growth. Anderson remains one of my favorite authors simply because he helped me change my life, directing me towards healing and ultimately the one who heals all brokenness my God. I was helped greatly through the book the Bondage Breaker, and have directed hurting people to this book (and the Bible) since.

It is no surprise that when I saw this book come through my email lists to review that I jumped at the opportunity.

This book is comprised of six sessions, the titles being: Being Transformed, Living Under Grace, Overcoming Anger, Overcoming Anxiety, Overcoming Depression, and Overcoming Losses. I equally found each chapter to hold valuable truths that can help hurting people heal and overcome struggles of depression, loss and discontentment.

In all the chapters Anderson references the bible and includes key points and verses. He also includes daily readings (passages of the bible) where we can turn to glean a greater understanding of our struggles and how God intended us to deal with them.
At the end of the chapters there is a study guide which would be great for a small group setting or to explore your relationship with God and your life situations on your own.

This book, in my opinion like the Bondage Breaker, is a fabulous tool to help the broken and wounded people in our lives to experience the freedom only God can bring. It is such a blessing to be reading this book "healed" God is Good, all the time, in the pain and brokenness we can be made new and beautiful.

Great tool for renewing your mind

This book is the fourth in a series of studies with the goal of helping Christians become more like Christ. Each book is aimed at addressing a hurdle Christians encounter in their spiritual walk. This study concentrates on tearing down mental strongholds, allowing Christ to rule in our hearts, being led by the Spirit, living under grace, and overcoming anger, depression and loss.

The book is divided into six sessions. Each session contains five chapters for daily study. Each daily study has a key point, a key verse, a little over a page of teaching, questions to answer, and a relevant quote from a church father. There are tips at the back of the book for group leaders.

The teaching sections in the book are well thought out, clear, and very practical. For each session, Anderson takes us through all that is necessary to renew our minds. He helps us to not just think about Scripture but to think scripturally, to see life from God's perspective.

One aspect of the study I especially appreciated and found very helpful was the teaching on the distinction between godly goals and godly desires. We may think we have a godly goal, but when its fulfillment depends on other people, it is really a godly desire, not a goal. I'm a goal maker and now I understand some of the frustration I have been feeling.

Anderson believes that many problems Christians have, such as some forms of mental depression, stem from false perceptions of yourself, your circumstances, and your future. These false perceptions can only be overcome as you are transformed by the renewing of your mind and by choosing to believe the truth. (152) This book will definitely help you identify the areas of false perceptions and give you the tools to move to biblical thinking. While this book can be used on a personal basis, I would suggest going through the book with a trusted friend or small group. The support of another would be very valuable in this process.

Working through this book, I think, will just be the beginning of the process of renewing your mind. As Anderson outlines near the end of the book, you have to be committed to this transforming process. If you are willing to work at renewing your mind, this study is a great resource. If you are a new Christian, you may want to go through studies one through three first.

Wonderful Bible Study Book for Small Groups

Renewing Your Mind is a Bible study book, not a read-through book. It is designed for individual or small group study. It is organized into six week’s worth of bite-sized lessons. The lay-out reminded me of the scripture in Isaiah 28 that talks about learning precept upon precept, line upon line. This study does that. It was orderly and progressive.

This book is also one small part of a large quantity of Bible study books meant to be studied together and probably in order, too.

For each day there is a suggested passage of scripture to read (not included in the text), a commentary that usually included some sort of word picture, metaphor or analogy that was easy to understand, and questions to stir your thinking intended to help with application.

The question section has room (in the print edition) to write your answers in the book. And this section seemed most suited for small groups, as I found some of the questions to be frustrating or pointless, at least without someone to discuss them with.

The first two chapters (weeks) were foundational in nature and then succeeding chapters (weeks) were focused on specific topics that are common trouble points for many Christians, that is, anger, anxiety, depression, and handling loss.

This book contains lots of nuggets of wisdom and it seemed geared towards for Christians that were believers young in their faith or perhaps those who have not ever learned some basics of the Christian life for whatever reason.

If you are newer to the Christian faith or you teach a Sunday school class or cell group with newer believers check this book out. It may be just what you were looking for!

About the Author

Carol Carter was a C student in high school. During her senior year, she got a wake-up call when her brother told her that she had intelligence, but she wouldn’t go far in life unless she believed in herself enough to work hard. She began college knowing she was “behind the eight ball” in terms of her skills. What she lacked in experience, she made up for with elbow grease and persistence. She maximized her strength as an interpersonal and intrapersonal learner. The work paid off and she graduated college with honors and a desire to help other students.

            Carol is committed to helping students turn on their brains, get motivated, and discover their abilities. As President of her own company, LifeBound, she teaches study, interpersonal, and career skills to middle school and high school students in order to help them become competitive in today’s global world. She trains and certifies coaches in academic coaching skills, and focuses on at-risk students with her volunteer teaching at the federal prison and her LifeBound work in the Denver housing projects. “All students are at-risk for something whether it is academic, emotional, social, or economic,” says Carol. “If each of us is allowed to be human and accept our flaws, we can overcome our limitations and be the best for ourselves and others.” 

            Carol also speaks on educational topics nationally and internationally, and is pictured here with some students at the Aziza Schoolhouse in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  Her first book, Majoring in the Rest of Your Life, launched her writing career and opened the door to her work on the Keys to Success series.

 

Joyce Bishop has taught college students for more than 22 years.  After struggling with a learning disability as a student, she focused on her visual and logical-mathematical learning abilities and went on to earn a PhD in psychology. Right now, she is in her dream job as staff development coordinator at Golden West College while still teaching three classes.  She enjoys training other faculty in effective teaching and learning strategies and also in how to teach online.  For 5 years Joyce was voted “favorite teacher,” she was Teacher of the Year for 1995 and 2000, and in 2008 received the Hayward Award, a state teaching award.

Joyce co-founded a program 19 years ago for poor young women from abusive backgrounds. Since that time, the Pathways to Independence nonprofit foundation has sent 255 young women to college, and 195 have graduated into gainful employment.  For these young women coming from challenging backgrounds such as prison, extreme poverty, abuse, or psychological disorders, Joyce has been their champion. This photo is of Joyce with one of the Pathways graduates, Valerie, who obtained her degree in nursing and is now working at a major university hospital as a pediatric nurse.  “It is so inspiring to see what these young women do with their lives,” says Joyce, “once they know that they can do anything.”

 

Sarah Lyman Kravits lives the strategies for success she writes about. As an author and mother of three children ages 11, 9, and 5, she faces the challenges of managing time and fulfilling responsibilities (not to mention eating right and getting enough sleep).  In her writing and research, she works to stay creative and keep up with technology and the growth of knowledge.  In her work with colleagues all over the country, she strives for integrity, effective communication, productive teamwork, and flexibility. Finally, in her current role as a breast cancer patient, she uses goal achievement and stress management strategies every day to get through a host of new and unexpected challenges.           

            Unlike Carol and Joyce, Sarah thrived in school from an early age based on her strength in verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical learning. A few years after graduating from the University of Virginia as a Jefferson Scholar, she worked as program director for LifeSkills, Inc., a nonprofit organization that aims to further the career and personal development of high school students.  This work led her into co-authoring her first student success text and the realization she was driven to empower students to reach their goals.  “Lifelong learning is the essential success skill,” says Sarah. “Learning gives you a chance to go beyond just thinking about your dreams so that you can make them happen.”

All High School & College Students Should Read This Book

While attending community college, I was required to read this text for a class called: "Student Life Skills". While a lot of the information was more of a review for me personally, I feel that the topics covered within this text are definitely appropriate for high school students and especially college freshmen. I'm an "older" student--- going to college in my 30s----and as a result I found myself realizing that a lot of the suggestions in this book were things that I was already doing in my academic career.

This book is easy to read, clear and concise. The wording is simple and uses plain, everyday English. I also recommend utilizing as many online resources that the book has to offer. Even though it is geared towards college level students, high schoolers will certainly benefit.

Excellent resources for new and returning college students

this is a good book for people returning to college or new students going to college. It is written so that
anyone can understand the the concepts explained in the book.
It is colourful and interesting, has personality assessment, thinking style assessments and survey's in the book
which helps a new student to understand how they process information. I highly recommend this book, it is used in
the freshman seminar class that I teach and students reviews are always favourable

The best beginner's book

The most impressing feature of this book is that it's less than 100 pages and very easy to read. At the same time, it covers things from the very basics of JavaScript to dynamic HTML, and to Ajax. There is also a website for this book where you can test simple but very educational example codes in the book.

I have some programing background (I am not a programmer) but never touched JavaScript. I finished this book within 2 nights and really got a good understanding of this language, and its applications such as dynamic HTML and Ajax. It's not a reference book so I need to check other sources for more details later on. But now I think I can start building web pages with JavaScript!

I definitely recommend this book as the beginner's first book. And after this book you may not need others. You'll know what to look for on the internet.

Scholastic now releases an accessible background of his life and career that gives you all of the important events in Lebron's life that led to his success. For a class project or as independent reading, this book will appeal to young boys.

The audience for this book is definitely boys who like to play basketball, or just like sports in general. The language is very accessible and age appropriate. The information is not too overwhelming and would lend itself well to a book report or PowerPoint presentation.

I Am #12: Lebron James is the perfect go-to book to learn a little more about the basketball superstar!

It was a pretty good book.

I liked this book because it was interesting. One thing the author did well was he made the words not too small and not too big. My favorite part was when Lebron went from poor to rich. My favorite character was Lebron because he liked football in his school. I would recommend this book because it was interesting.

purchased for 14 yr old great grandson. I was interested so I read it before gifting the book. He and I were both impressed with Lebron's desire to represent citizenship, values and concern for others. He is a remarkable young man with enormous talent and an enormous heart
