Long recognized as a pioneering work in the ethnohistory of California, Chiefs and Challengers, when it first appeared, overturned the stereotype of Indian victimhood and revealed a complex political landscape in which Native peoples interacted with one another as much as they did with non-Indians intruding into their territories. Although historian George Harwood Phillips did not shy away from chronicling the mistreatment of Indians, he moved beyond that approach to examine Indian-white interactions from both Indian and white perspectives. This new edition describes the indigenous cultures of southern California and offers a detailed history of the repercussions of Euro-American colonization.

Because there was no geographical frontier in California separating Indians and whites, the interaction varied significantly from region to region in California. In the south, conflict reached a climax in 1851 when Antonio Garra led a pan-Indian revolt that sent shock waves throughout California, forcing the Americans to take counteractions that affected themselves as much as the Indians.

In this second edition of Chiefs and Challengers, Phillips brings the story into the twentieth century by drawing upon recent historical and anthropological scholarship and upon seldom-used documentary evidence. After 1865, Indians faced new problems, including settler encroachment and the imposition of the reservation system. That some Indians succeeded in holding onto their ancestral lands, Phillips shows, is evidence of their strategic efforts to survive. His narrative includes numerous eloquent testimonies from Indians, among them a student at a government-run school who wrote to the U.S. president: “The white people call San Jacinto rancho their land and I don’t want them to do it. We think it is ours, for God gave it to us first.”

Levine covers all of the intricacies of the Hellenistic and Roman occupations, the rise of various religious sects such as the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the customs associated with temple worship. Though dry at times, this is a well-organized and exhaustively informative resource.

Lee I. Levine is on the faculty of Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and served as head of the Dinur Research center for the Study of Jewish History from 1997 through 2001. He is the author of numerous books on Jewish history and has published more than 100 articles and book reviews. Dr. Levine is the recipient of over a dozen awards and has taught at both Yale and Harvard.

Well Researched, Well Written, Well Worth Reading

The development of Jerusalem as a cultural and political center is a fascinating subject for anyone who really wants to understand the Biblical record. How did the city move from being rebuilt in the writings of Nehemiah to being under Roman rule in the time of Christ? Who is Herod, and why was there more than one High Priest? Lee Levine provides an account of the political and religious developments in Jerusalem from Cyrus to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD from a strictly Jewish perspective.

Beyond the strong Jewish influence, however, the reader will notice the author also assumes, throughout, that most of the documents we call the Scriptures were written much later in history than they claim, and they show the handiwork of religious communities intent on shaping it's past to guide it's future. This is common enough in modern scholarly circles, but Christians who take a literal inspiration view of the Scriptures should note this underlying assumption when considering Dr. Levine's line of thinking.

The book itself is arranged in a strictly historical way; the first part deals with Jerusalem falling into Persian hands under Cyrus, and ends with Herod taking the city for Rome. Along the way the author deals with the rise of the High Priest as the primary point of political and religious contact in the City, and with the increasing Hellenization of City's culture and institutions. He also deals with the Hasmonean revolt, begun by an attempt on the part of the Selucids to effectively eliminate Judaism as a religion.

The second part considers the conquest by Rome, and the rule of Herod the Great, the king who was on the throne at the time of Christ's birth. Here the author provides an overview of the various building projects Herod undertook in the City, including a number of towers, an additional wall, his palace, baths, places of entertainment, water works, and the Temple and it's surrounding area. The scope of these construction projects is truly massive --we probably still don't know the total size and of the various projects Herod undertook. For Christian scholars, one interesting point in this section will be author's discussion on languages in use in Jerusalem during this time period. The use of Greek and Hebrew is much more widely attested than many modern readers assume; Jesus and his Disciples probably spoke at least three languages to one degree or another in everyday life.

Another fascinating study throughout this section is the outlining and study of the various religious sects common in and around Jerusalem during this period. The Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes are brought to life through various Biblical and extra-Biblical writings. The picture that emerges softens the Pharisees, hardens the Sadducees, and provides us with vital clues to understanding how Jesus played these two groups off one another to minister throughout Israel for three years.

The final part discusses the decline and fall of Jerusalem, ending with the destruction of the Temple and the City in 70AD. The author argues that Titus destroyed the Temple with intent, rather than by mistake, as is often asserted. The author attributes at least some degree of the Roman actions in putting down this revolt so completely to resolving the infighting as much as putting down a "garden variety" revolt.

Overall, this is an excellent resource for those who want to gain another perspective on the life of Jerusalem as a city during the times that Christ actually lived. The political and religious background is invaluable in understanding many incidents in the Gospel accounts, providing color and depth to what the original writers probably assumed their readers would know.

A gem

Levine does an excellent job in portraying Jerusalem during the Second Temple Period. More than that, he gives the reader a feel for what life was like in the city during that time.

The book is well-written and packed with information. While it is not an exciting read, the 416 pages of text move along at a good pace. The author discusses issues over which scholars disagree, but he never allows his summary of the debates to become bogged down in needless detail.

As a Christian, I found his description of Jerusalem in the first century A.D. to be particularly valuable. The book provided small but valuable insights into the life of the first Christians in Jerusalem.

For background information about the Old Testament post-exilic period and the New Testament era, this book is a gem.

I can't recommend this highly enough to readers interested in the in-depth results of scholarly work on Jerusalem that the average person can understand. Rarely am I so impressed with a book. It is logical, easy to follow and isn't wordy.

Carlson, a practicing psychologist and stress consultant, makes a powerful point that we have two psychological modes most of the time: Reactive and responsive. The responsive state of mind is relaxed; we see the big picture; we are flexible, calm and at our best. Handy review of self-imposed roadblocks to success

Stupid title; smart book. I agree with all of the previous reviewers. It is superficial, unoriginal, banal, and trite. Sometimes it goes on like the Middle-aged-man character on SNL or like Polonius in Hamlet. It is, on the other hand, useful. If a chapter is particularly useless or irritatingly banal, read on. In a few minutes, you're sure to fine a pearl or two in this oyster. Do not read this book if you are looking for a way to make a quick killing in the stock market, or real-estate, or whatever. This book will be way too superficial. Instead it deals with self-imposed road blocks to successful endeavors and relationships. It deals how to develop the kind of supportive relationships that build confidence, teach valuable skills, offer reality checks, and so on. There is nothing new in the book, nor is anything dealt with in depth, but the average reader will find something to which he has not paid enough attention. It's well worth the asking price and the time spent reading it -- many times over, if you can put some of the advice into action. Just one idea that strikes a nerve can change one's life. It's helped me.

the christian myth with a black face

Its the usual syncretizing here. Paul Boyd, goes from being objectively historical, to subjectively dogmatic by pg 100 up, preposing that the Christian belief of a Jesus christ is some how valid, despite any proof from sources outside of the christian world before and after. He goes on to assert that the creators of the Egyptian philosophy were polytheistic and paganistic, which shows that he doesn't know much about the Egyptian (KMT) symbolism or world philosophy.

There is a big difference between a Priest Artisans intent and a outside commoners interpretation, because different Egyptians paid homage to certain deities or more, does not mean that they did not recognize a supreme source, quite the contrary, Amen is representative of the Supreme source as the unseen or underlying cause of all manifested deities, deities representing the attributes of the source. But, one must channel through the deities for communication as all Africans didn't believe you could contact the source personally but had to go through It's mediums, which is the same as christians communicating to their god through the medium jesus. There has been many accounts of Shamans through out history in Africa and abroad, healing people, but none ever claim that it was through a jesus of the Israelites that they work. God can't be define to favoritism of one group, all things in the Universe is the begotten of the so-called God.

Really ppl, if we need to alter what the Truth represents, then it is pointless to argue against who's side is more truer, especially when one ignores the principles of perception for their own selfish means, stop believing and start perceiving. nuff said!

Father McAdams had recommended the Pessumae Christi, and had invited his friend, Father Sinclair, to come and interview her.
Jenny had been shy and tongue-tied in front of this charismatic man, certain that she had fumbled this opportunity. Nonetheless, Father Sinclair had accepted her into the order not just warmly, but almost gleefully.
He had loudly and enthusiastically congratulated Father McAdams on finding such a perfect candidate for the order, and promised him that Jenny would be sent back to visit him, once she had completed her training. This seemed to make Father McAdams very happy, and there was a twinkle in his eye as he wished her farewell, and said he looked forward very much to their next meeting.
Now, as she stood naked in front of Father Sinclair and four strange men, Jenny remembered Father McAdams words of praise for her beauty. No, not his words, the words came from God - words of praise for her full, rounded breasts, whose pink nipples were very hard as she straightened, resisting the urge to cover herself with her hands. Instead, Jenny squared her shoulders, unconsciously cocking her hip, pale skin glowing in the candlelight as she modestly looked down at the stone floor.
Her slender figure seemed almost doll-like compared to the bulky, black-robed shapes surrounding her.
She heard a soft, seemingly involuntary murmur from Father Sinclair.

Pushed all the right buttons. Highly recommend.

If you like complete surrender in response to complete domination, then you will like this book. Hot! This was so hot I needed relief part way through.

Jenny is a novice sister in the Pessumae Christi. She is ready to face her initiation where the charismatic Father Sinclair awaits to deliver her trails and to judge her readiness and worthiness. He is joined by 4 other monks who will also initiate Jenny into her new role as a Sister in the Order of Pessumae Christi, (Pessumae is the Latin word for tool and it is a female word) Oh my does she relish being used as the tool by the Priests and Monks in order to help them to perform their holy good works.

Clearly, this is no love story and anyone who is expecting one... well I've got some property in Florida I'd like to sell you. This doesn't even register on my cruelty scale, highly humiliating, extremely dominating, and erotic as hell (or heaven) with some tender moments and a little bit of bondage and spanking sprinkled in to add some spice to the domination by Father Sinclair. A two panty read!

This was such a hot read i purchased the second book immediately after finishing. This book could possibly also fall under GBin so if that isnt your fortay you might not like it. The story itself was extremely detailed, hot, addictive and delicious. I was disappointed to see the third book is not available yet, but i look forward to reading linns other books and stories. PLEASE keep the hot stories coming. My husband thanks you. ;-)

Good, different. Makes you wonder if these things really happen in religious ...they probably do....Author as quite an imagination....waiting for the next adventure for Jenny.. Hope that her and father....get together...
