We love this item

We love this item! However, we were disappointed that it came used, I thought I bought a new book, it was for a gift, but I will try to get another one later: according to the front cover, there should be 40 colored sheets (there were only 33) inside the book's custom folder that holds the papers, three were paper plane folded at the pages; the cover itself was worn and slightly scratched, but now I see that I had bought it used...very disappointed!

While some of the designs in this book are golden oldies, it includes designs with which I am unfamiliar. All of the designs fly well, and I was particularly pleased with the paper provided to make the airplanes. The paper is lighter weight than printer paper or loose leaf lined paper that folded easily and retained its folds well.

The instructions in the book are very easy to follow, and will get you flying in no time, though they are too complex for younger children. My 5 year old needs help with making these planes, but once completed, they fly easily, even when he's throwing them.

Bottom line: I'd buy this book again, and recommend it for all novice paper pilots.

Brings out the kid in all of us

I've bought this book several times as a gift and it generally gets a lot of interest from kids and adults alike. My copy is many years old and it gets pulled out regularly when 8 and 6 year old grandchildren visit. I've long ago used up the paper it comes with and instead just use copier paper that we sometimes color with crayons. 8 year old can make the planes himself, 6 year old still needs help. Book contains flying and adjustment tips. The kids and I enjoy flying the planes we make. I highly recommend this book for someone starting out making paper airplanes or someone that needs a good "go to book" to make airplanes that always fly.

Best book on California government for the general public

Most overviews of California government are textbooks written for high school and college students. These books are fine for their intended purpose, but they are either too long or simplistically written to provide a good overview of California government to most adults interested in understanding and being part of the political process. This book fills that need by providing a useful summary of how California state and local government works, and it even provides plenty of insights. For example, it explains impacts that Prop 13 has had on the political process that would be difficult to learn from other general information sources such as Wikipedia or state government websites. This book is highly recommended for both politically active citizens and for anyone who works in or with any California government agency.

Best available translation

I know from experience that Ancient Greek is hard to translate, and Aristotle is particularly thorny. I have also read various translations of this work and others by Aristotle. Sachs's translation keeps things literal while carefully bringing the nuance of the Greek into English. I believe this to be the best available translation of the Physics.

The only good translation

Aristotle's Physics is one of the least studied "great books"--physics has come to mean something entirely different than Aristotle's inquiry into nature, and stereotyped Medieval interpretations have buried the original text. Sach's translation is really the only one that I know of that attempts to take the reader back to the text itself.

I do have a few quibbles, mostly with the presentation. The line numbers are buried in the text, rather than set off in the margins, which is annoying. The typeface is difficult and too closely packed. The cover is one of the ugliest ever produced. The book is too expensive, given the quality.

If you are going to study or teach the Physics in English, however, this is absolutely the edition you should use.

Best Translation Out There

This translation of Aristotle's Physics is really the best one available - and not simply because the others are terrible (some of them are not terrible), but because this one is extraordinary. As some of the other reviewers may have suggested, it can be hard to read at times because of the unfamiliar phrasings. However, I think this is irrelevant because (a) other translation are not easy reading either, (b) other translations are not as good at capturing Aristotle's meaning so that even if they were much easier to read they just make it that much easier for you to misunderstand Aristotle, (c) in fact the efforts required to follow the unfamiliar phrasings in this translation are themselves part of what makes this translation the most useful for anyone who wants to understand Aristotle, and (d) its really not all that hard to read. (And the same points go for the other translations by Sachs.) Chapter 2 establishes the conceptual background for the test, describes how it relates to traditional theories and models describing physical decline in later years, and presents a brief overview of the test items.

Chapter 3 contains the scientific documentation for the test's validity, reliability, and performance standards.

Chapter 4 includes a list of procedures and issues that need to be addressed prior to testing, along with sample instruction sheets, forms, and equipment lists to use in planning for the test. Also included are proper warm-up and pretest instructions that should be given to the participants prior to testing and descriptions of the official testing and scoring protocols.

Chapter 5 explains how to interpret test results and how to use the information to motivate participants to increase their activity levels and improve their performances.

The Senior Fitness Test helps professionals not only motivate older adults, but also assess the major physiological components of functional capacity so that emerging weaknesses can be detected and treated before causing serious functional limitations.

About the Author

Roberta E. Rikli, PhD, is professor and chair of the division of kinesiology and health promotion at California State University in Fullerton and is cofounder of the LifeSpan Wellness Program at Fullerton.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Rikli has done extensive work in physical performance assessment with a particular focus on senior fitness. She has published numerous scientific papers on her work and has made over 100 presentations at conferences and workshops in the United States, Germany, France, Finland, China, and Japan. She serves on the editorial boards of three scientific journals and is a regular reviewer for several others.

She holds professional memberships in numerous organizations including the International Society for Aging and Physical Activity; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); and the American Academy for Kinesiology and Physical Education.

Dr. Rikli lives in Orange, California, and enjoys hiking and playing tennis and golf.

C. Jessie Jones, PhD, is a professor of the division of kinesiology and health promotion at California State University in Fullerton and is codirector of the Center for Successful Aging at Fullerton.

Dr. Jones is internationally known for her research, program design, curriculum development, and instructor training in the field of exercise science and aging. She has taught senior fitness classes and conducted training workshops for senior fitness instructors for over 15 years. Her work has been covered in numerous publications and presented at conferences worldwide.

Her professional memberships include the Gerontological Society of America; the California Council for Gerontology and Geriatrics; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Dr. Jones also lives in Orange, California, where she enjoys hiking, playing golf, and dancing.

I am a health consultant to senior citizens. This book provides easy and effective tests to measure their aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility without sophisticated equiptment. I am grateful to the authors for their research and testing prior to publishing this tool for alerting seniors to their level of fitness.

I am writing this as a former student of Dr. Jones that now works with older adults. I know how much work Dr. Jones and Dr. Rikili did in publishing this book!

This test is so easy to understand for both the client and instructor. The equipment needed is minimal and inexpensive. This book is a highly recommended and a very wise investment for informing and motivating your senior clients!

A decent book but not for everyone...

I should have figured it out from the cover but I got this for myself and found that it's really intended for seniors living a much more sedentary life than I do. I ended up giving it to my 84 year old mother, who likes it a lot. If you're working out strenuously every day, the tests are going to be laughably easy, but if you're a retired desk jockey, you can probably benefit from it.
