VERY HELPFUL!!!

I can't express how much of a help this book has been for me. I am taking Anatomy & Physiology which is required for the RN program. This book does not cover everything that is in my textbook, but it does cover the basics, and it is written in a way that I can comprehend it. This book follows the chapters in the same order of my textbook and what I usually do is read the chapter in this book first to understand the basics and then I do the practice tests at the end of the chapter. After I have a good understanding of the material, then I will proceed with my textbook and read the material in it with a better understanding. Also, it helps too if I read the material in this book the night before my class to get a good idea of what the professor will be talking about in his lecture.

My anatomy & physiology class is almost finished and with the help of this book my grades are the following: Quizes-96, 94, 100, 100 and Exams-93, 92, 88, 85. I must admit that science is one of my weaker subjects. In high school I barely passed with a "D". Now I am returning to college to get a degree after many years since high school. Most of my classmates are struggling in Anatomy & Physiology and are wondering how I am doing so well. I continue to remind them to buy this book. Without it, I'd probably be struggling too.

This book was a life saver, I wish I had known about it when I started the class. This books really breaks down the material in an easy to read format. It also comes with a ton of multiple choice and alternate answer review questions. Before I purchased this book I was failing the class, I was able to go from a 56 to a 96 with the help of this book. I highly recommend it!!!!

THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL!!!!

I am in Anatomy & Physiology 101 in College. I never took either course in high school so this book has been a tremendous help!!! My teacher is very hard and when it comes to exams and quizzes. She does not give you much of an idea on what to study, so you are expected to know EVERYTHING!!!! My first exam covered Chapters 1 - 5 and the only time I opened my College Textbook was to study diagrams and review questions at the end of each chapter....that's it! I only read this book, completed the test questions at the end of each chapter in this book, studied my class lecture notes and studied the review questions that are on the computer lab. I received an "A" on the exam when the majority of the class failed! All I can say is that this book has been a wonderful tool and I highly recommend it to everyone! It follows my textbook chapter by chapter, terminology is much easier to understand in this book, and I can not say enough good things about it! I will definitely keep using this book through Anatomy 101 and also when I continue into Anatomy 102! Highly, highly recommend!

About the Author

Fascinating Exploration--highly reccomended

This book is absolutely captivating. It very intelligently details the concept of attractiveness on different levels, as well as the evolutionary basis for what we consider attractive, mostly based on genetic health as well as information on how we generally perceive the human face ( facial expressions, structure, etc.)
Overall, a well written, in-depth and fascinating exploration of both attractiveness and the human face in general. I highly recommend it.

I get the point

While there are some interesting bits of information, the author is trying to find a scientific justification for how people feel about beauty. He uses computer imaging to merge or distort various facial features to explain variation from an imagined "average." It was too dense and became very uninteresting.

''In Your Face'' is an engaging read about the biology and psychology behind facial beauty.
Filled with many interesting insights from neuroscience and evolutionary psychology about facial beauty and human attraction.
Sure, historically beauty has been the domain of poets and artists. Nevertheless, studying beauty with scientific methods turns out to be a lot of fun.
Indeed, perhaps science knows just as much about beauty as the poets?

We might think of ourselves, as we are on the inside. But in reality our selves are strongly linked to our physical body, in particular our face. And when we look at others, certainly, we assume that there is indeed a strong link between a face, and health and personality of the person the face belongs to.
So, obviosuly studying faces is tremendously important.

It is well known that studies show that symmetry and looking healthy go together.
And the book presents these claims in a very thorough and interesting way.
Along with other claims of links between facial clues and health.
Even pigmentation of the skin, skin aging and much more are also dealt with.

And then there is faces and personality. This is
where it gets really interesting. And fun to read about.
But probably a lot more difficult to be say something very definite about - than
most of us think.
All very well described in the book.

All in all, the book is a good and entertaining read.

About the Author

Mr. LIN JIANJUA was born in Indonesia 1953 and came back to China with his family in 1954. He began to learn Chinese martial arts in 1964. He entered the Physical Education Department of Fujian Normal University in 1973 and studied Chinese Martial Arts under the direction of Professor Guo Minhua. In 1979, Mr. Lin entered Wuhan Institute of physical Education to learn Form and Will Boxing (Shing-Yee-Ch'uan), Eight-diagram Palm (Bagua-Ch'uan), Taijiquan (T'ai-Chi-Ch'uan) and other excellent techniques from Professor Wen Jingming and Professor Liu Yuhua, the famous martial artists of China.

On graduation from Fujian Normal University in 1976, Mr. Lin began his career in universities as a martial arts teacher. He worked in the Physical Education Department of Fujian Normal University from 1978 to 1983, and he has worked in the Physical Education Department of Amoi University since 1983. During the past eighteen years, Mr. Lin has taught many students Chinese martial arts, some of whom came from Japan, America, England, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, New Zealand, Germany, Singapore and The Philippines. He has once been invited to Ateneo University of The Philippines to give a lectures of Chinese martial arts.

Mr. Lin Jianhua is now a council member of Fujian Martial Arts Association, the vice-president of Amoy Martial Arts Association, the president of Martial Arts Association and the Research Society of Taijiquan of Amoi University, and the chief coach of the martial arts team of Amoi University. As a national grade judge of martial arts, he has executed his duties in many national or international contests of martial arts.

Book could easily be improved

This is on Ok book. It lacks in two things: 1. Proper editing. I don't believe words are mistranslated- they are misspelled. This is the editors fault. 2. Better pictures- The pictures on the outside cover of the book are great- but the insided pictures leave a lot to be desired. They are grainy black and white photos that look like old newspaper photos. They allow you to get the general idea of a posture or stance but details of a particular technique are lost.

Well worth the money

I have been practicing Xingyiquan for over two years now and find this book a great help. The pictures are a bit overexposed, but you can figure them out. If you are looking for a book with pretty pictures to put on your coffee table, go somewhere else.
But if you want to learn Xingyiquan, there are not much better sources, than this book.
I have read some bad reviews on this particular book that almost made me not buy it, but I did anyway. And I am glad I did.
Someone said that their teacher told them that there isn't ONE CORRECT movement in the book.
To me, this sounds a bit arrogant. And it would be tough to make a book on Xingyiquan without ONE correct movement. I think that that person who wrote that review has an instructor who knows nothing about Xingyiquan.
If he did know about Xingyiquan, he would know that there are plenty of different styles to the art. And that they are ALL done in somewhat different ways.
My instructor is a Master in all the internal arts and said the book was very good. This coming from a man who wrote his own book on the subject.
The thing one has to understand about ANY marital arts, is that there are different branches. This doesn't happen to be from my branch, but it does not mean that I cannot learn from it.
The intent of the art is there, and that is the important thing.
Even forms from Teacher to Student, things can change to a certain degree.
But this book (Bad Photo's aside) is one of the best books on the subject. It is jammed with precise information and is well worth your time and money. I have over two hundred books on Martial Arts (Mostly Chinese MA) and find this one to be one of great value.

Solid Content, Poor Production Quality

It's a shame that this book couldn't have been cleaned up a bit. The translation is awkward, and the pictures are too light. Having said that, I must admit that I really like this book. Books on Hsing-i are not as hard to find as they used to be, but most today choose to cover the same old material. The five fists are included here, as well as the twelve animals, but the author goes on to further cover a couple of forms not available in other English language books. The photos are excellent in CONTENT, but as I said before, they're too light. Still one may overlook the shortcomings of the book and concentrate on the positives. This book would be best read after reading Robert W. Smith's book on the same topic (preferably the original version, if you can find it).

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Just a couple of months after Arun wishes he had a sister with whom to celebrate Rakhi Day, his parents announce that they are adopting a girl. As he awaits his new sibling's arrival, he carefully crafts a special paper airplane, pretending that it is flying to India to bring her home. After more waiting, Dad finally retrieves Asha, who gives Arun the rakhi bracelet she clung to during the flight. An author's note provides additional details about adoption and the North Indian Hindu holiday that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, symbolized by a bracelet given by the sister. Realistic illustrations spread across the pages in muted colors and show well the characters' range of emotions, but Arun's adultlike narration does not match the innocence of his actions. While the text states that Arun is eight, his size seems to vary from picture to picture. Although Krishnaswami does add a unique perspective to a genre largely focused on Chinese adoptions, Janet Morgan Stoeke's Waiting for May (Dutton, 2005), Jean Davies Okimoto's The White Swan Express (Clarion, 2002), and Ed Young's My Mei Mei (Philomel, 2006) more fully describe the adoptive family's process.–Julie R. As the year drags on and his parents speak of forms and permissions, Arun studies the baby's photograph and eagerly plans for her arrival. Finally, a full year later, his father returns with baby sister Asha and a special rakhi or bracelet for brother Arun. Filled with tender details, the story opens and closes on the Hindu holiday Rakhi, a day when siblings honor each other. Chalk pastel illustrations follow the text closely, but the dark palette of blues and grays sets a somber tone for the joyful story. Arun's tale presents an authentic slice of East Indian American life and provides a fresh perspective in adoption stories. An appended note adds information about Rakhi. The Plot: Arun's family adopts a baby girl from India.

The Good: The story is framed by the Hindu holiday Rakhi, a holiday that is about brothers and sisters. Arun wishes he had a sister so that he could celebrate Rakhi. A few months later, he finds out the family is going to adopt a little girl from India, the country where Arun's father was born. The story ends with the baby, Asha, (now about one years old) arriving just in time for Rakhi. It's a holiday I was unfamiliar with; but it's a perfect holiday to celebrate children becoming siblings, and it's also one that will be easily understood by children hearing the story.

I love that this story was framed by this holiday; and I love that the pictures and text show a family that celebrates a diverse heritage. Rakhi is celebrated; during October, there is a jack-o'-lantern on a table. The pictures, as well as the text, show a biracial family. (Truth be told, I didn't pick that up until my second reading, when I noticed that Dad's country of origin was mentioned but not Mom. The Lee & Low website confirmed this. I like that it's not a "hit you over the head with it" part of the story.)

This is a great story about adoption, particularly international adoption, and the long wait many families face in waiting for their adoptive child. "When you adopt a baby from one country and bring her to another, there are many governmental forms to fill out and laws to follow," Dad says. "It takes time." (I am so good. I am not making any snarky comments about international adoptions and certain celebrities.) While the actual process takes a long time, Bringing Asha Home shows a family taking the steps to welcome the baby into their hearts long before the child is brought into their home: a room is prepared, Arun makes her presents of paper airplanes, and a birthday party is held.

Arun really wants a little sister. His best friend, Michael, has one and even though Michael isn't that impressed by the experience, Arun thinks having a baby sister would be great. He tells Michael, "In India, where my dad was born, sisters tie shiny bracelets on the wrists of their brothers. The bracelets are called rakhi too, just like the holiday. Brothers and sisters promise to be good to each other, and everyone eats special sweets."

Arun soon finds out that he will have a baby sister. Mom and Dad are adopting a baby girl, Asha, from India. But the wait and the papers and the regulations are excruciating. Arun, in the meantime, turns eight and celebrates his birthday without Asha. The family even celebrates Asha's first birthday without her. Arun makes do by fashioning the best paper airplane he's ever created for his sister and placing it on a shelf in her room.

Finally, Arun tells us, "a few weeks later, on a sticky-warm Saturday, I find an envelope from India in the mailbox." It's the letter. "We help Dad get ready for his long trip. I write colorful letters--forward, backward, upside down--on the folded wings of the paper plane I've been saving for Asha. I tuck it into Dad's suitcase."

"Bringing Asha Home" is a beautiful adoption story from a brother's point of view. Jamel Akib's illustrations are warm, friendly, and accessible. I hope that "Bringing Asha Home" will be read outside the adoption community, however, because it's a universal story about the hopes of a boy and his family.

"Bringing Asha Home" is great read-aloud choice for children ages 4-9.

We read this book to our 2-year-old. He got very interested, especially that part of the story is making paper airplanes. :) Well, whatever helps. What was important to us was that the book provided a nice perspective on adoption.

professional to romance & back & forth

Retail-store employee is dismayed that company owner Hero who she met & shared a mutual attraction with the night before is closing down all their stores. She pleads with him to keep her store open & Hero tests her for what lengths he'll take for it. She returns his kisses but stops before it goes any further b/c she's unsure about his intentions. He thinks she's using her wiles on him for her job's sake & is likely two-timing him with her co-employee just like his ex-GF did. How will these 2 handle their dual r/s & trust each other?

This Peake book had good sexual tension, emotional involvement, & pacing. The romance & characters were erratic. Hero & heroin often switched back & forth from acting professional to personal with each other. Even their names for each other kept on switching! It got a bit annoying & predictable after awhile. The switch hinged on whether they got what they wanted from each other. For example, heroine acted & talked formally with Hero until He saved her store. She became formal again with him when she lost her store until the time He found her another job. Hero acted aloof & cold with heroine until she succumbed to his kisses. When she puts a stop to their intimacy, he changes from being open & romantic back to aloof & cold. It read like an emotional roller-coaster & showed how conditional their love was for each other.
