Calf: A Novel, by Andrea Kleine

The year was 1981. The US was entering a deep recession, Russia was our enemy, and John Hinckley, Jr.’s assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan shocked the nation. It was also the year author Andrea Kleine learned her close childhood friend had been violently murdered by her socialite mother, Leslie DeVeau. Both events took place in Washington, DC. Hinckley and Deveau were both sent to St. Elizabeth’s hospital, guilty by reason of insanity. It was there that they met, and later became lovers.

These two real-life, and ultimately converging events inspired Kleine’s jaw-dropping, spine-tingling novel, CALF. Made up of dual narratives and told over the course of one year, Kleine’s account follows a fictionalized John Hinckley Jr. as he stalks a young actress in the lead-up to the assassination attempt, and eleven-year-old Tammy, whose friend is murdered in her sleep.

Part Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret and part Taxi Driver, this creepy, unsettling, and absolutely addictive novel is at once a penetrating character study, a meditation on the zeitgeist of the '80s, and an unflinching depiction of violence, both intimate and sensational.

Review
"If you came of age in the 1980’s, then this coming October it would be wise for you to pick up Calf by Andrea Kleine. After admiring the cool jacket art, you get to roll around in its dueling narrative....How can you take a moment like the assassination of a President and fictionalize it to the point where it becomes its own fever dream? That is the magic here, and it is really impressive to read."—Three Guys One Book

"Dread stalks every page, and the result is unsettling, scary, and often brilliant. For readers looking for a sharp, twisted narrative, this is a keeper." —Publishers Weekly, starred review

"In 1981, John Hinckley, Jr.'s attempt to assassinate Ronald Reagan rocked the nation. And Andrea Kleine's gripping novel, Calf, will rock readers. This is a wonderfully unsettling book about love, loss, and unlikely connections."

- Elliott Holt, author of You Are One of Them

“I’m going upstairs,” Josie called out. She raised one foot and the dog moved with her, keeping an eye on Josie and hopping up one step at a time.
When Josie reached the landing and turned to face the upstairs hallway, her mouth dropped open and an invisible vacuum sucked the air out of her lungs. There was a long smear along the wall, like a modern art painting she didn’t quite understand. It was a red, drippy brush stroke and it looked like blood. Because there was no air left in her body, Josie couldn’t call out to Meredith down below. And maybe she didn’t want to. She didn’t want Meredith to think she couldn’t handle this.
Josie clamped her mouth closed. She wasn’t sure what propelled her body the rest of the way up the stairs. Her bare knees lifted as if she were a marionette doll with strings attached to her limbs. She walked strangely, straight up and down, not using her usual side-side gait. The dog was waiting for her at the top of the stairs. When Josie made it all the way up, she could see that the brush stroke led down the hall to the master bedroom. The dog scurried to the doorway of the room, but she wouldn’t go in. Josie floated down the hall, following the painted trail, like a sleepwalker only half-aware that she was moving through space. At the end, in the doorjamb, was a handprint. An ancient marking. Beware.

Compelling debut novel
By "switterbug" Betsey Van Horn
In this debut “faction” novel, the author takes an episode from her childhood—a friend murdered by her mother—and creates a chilling, nuanced dual narrative that is largely a domestic suspense story. The second narrative is based on John Hinckley Jr.’s attempted assassination of President Reagan. Both the true-life shooters were pronounced not guilty by reason of insanity, and met and became lovers at a mental institution. Kleine changes all the names, and invents a fictional story, to give free reign to go inside their heads and not be restricted by true events. This terrifying, character-driven drama allows the reader to follow the daily thoughts and actions of the killers and their families. There’s no gratuitous violence or pandering to readers. From the opening pages, the reader is installed in this accomplished, well-developed story.

As the novel progresses, CALF intensifies and grows more hair-raising and disturbing. Kleine brushes up against the second-person perspective, especially with the mentally disturbed and manipulative “Jeffrey Hackney” and the female killer that is inspired by the real-life Leslie DeVeau. The author did her research on mental illness, as these are no stereotypical generic types. Inch by inch, day by day, the murderers get closer to entirely disassociating. If there’s a theme here, then it is about the manifestation of violence in a socially ordered culture.

Lacks Complexity and Depth
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
Two narratives, told in the course of one year, present a fictional John Hinckley Jr. and an eleven year old girl whose friend is murdered by her own mother.

Jim is one of those guys who doesn't seem to be able to succeed in anything he does. He has a critical father and an almost obsequious mother. He carries both of their inner voices inside of him - the negative and critical father and the 'I know you can do it' mother. A lack of self-confidence and a narcissistic image of himself compete for his personality.

Tammy is the child of a modern blended family. She lives with her step-father Nick, critical and cruel, along with a cute sister who gets the positive attention, and a brother who is the biological son of Nick and her mother. Tammy has a friend named Kirin whose mother is thought to be odd. It is clear in the book that she suffers from a severe mental illness with command hallucinations that eventually lead her to kill Kirin in her sleep.

This novel takes the reader through the lives of both Tammy and Jim as they search for inner meaning and a way to express themselves. Unfortunately, the novel did not succeed for me. I did not like the author's narrative style and could not identify with Tammy. Jim seemed like a stereotype without the complexity he deserved. I finished the book and scratched my head. The denouement, just a very short part of the novel, seemed to come from nowhere and was very unrealistic

Twisted and intertwined narratives
By Jill I. Shtulman
Traumas that occur in childhood leave an indelible mark on survivors, who often recall those times in inimitable detail. I start this way because this book is inspired by a true story that affected the author. Her good friend was murdered by Leslie deVeau, the victim’s mother. Around the same time, John Hinckley Jr. tried to assassinate President Reagan. Later, deVeau and Hinckley became lovers while patients at St. Elizabeths Hospital.

This book is not a recreation of those events; rather, it is inspired by them. Any reader who expects a point-by-point comparison will be disappointed. That being said, there is a haunting authenticity to Calf, which pulls the reader in and doesn’t let go until the very last page.

Two narratives intertwine. One focuses on Tammy, a disaffected pre-teen who lives in Washington, D.C. with her mother, stepfather, and younger sister and brother. All the pain, alienation and disenchantment of those tender years is fully captured. In fact, Tammy is so real that she can walk off the page. The friend who is eventually murdered is not difficult to guess; we see the event building as if we are watching a trainwreck.

The other story, which gets equal time, spotlights Jeffrey Hackney (an obvious Hinckley stand-in) who obsesses over an actress named Amber Carrol. As he emotionally disintegrates, suspense rises although we know (or think we know) where the narrative is going.

For me, the more captivating of the two storylines is Tammy’s. There’s a rawness to it that made me feel as if Andrea Kleine was mining some deep emotional remembrances. Yet both storylines are powerful and unsettling. I read this book in two intense sittings.

Very helpful and educating series of books...
By muscadine-eyes
We bought this book to help us identify the proper names for what we have taken pictures of while vacationing various reefs in the caribbean over the past 10 years. We cannot always find everything that we may have a picture of, but it comes close. We have several of the other books written by this author and we have found them extremely helpful and educating. Nice layout and easy to use. Pictures are very good quality. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about coral reefs.

This is a fantastic book, and along with the other two books by this author you should be able to ID any marine creature you encounter!
The book lists virtually all types of corals including Algae, black corals, brain, lace, cactus, cup, boulder, fire, fleshy, etc.
Each entry has an excellent picture, the name, family, size, depth, and other information.
The pictures alone are worth the cost of the book!
This is definetely the book you want to have with you when you dive or snorkel. Buy it today, you won't be disappointed!

C. Wright Mills and the Sociological Imagination: Contemporary Perspectives, by John Scott, Ann Nilsen

C. Wright Mills is one of the towering figures in contemporary sociology and his writings continue to be of great relevance to the social science community. Generations of sociology students have enjoyed learning about the discipline from reading his best known book The Sociological Imagination. Over the years the title has become a term in itself with a variety of interpretations, many far removed from the original. The chapters in Part One of this book begins with general issues around the nature and significance of the sociological imagination, continue through discussions of modes of theorising and historical explanation, the relationship between history and biography, and the intellectual and political relationship of Mills to Marxism. They conclude with considerations on issues of class, power, and warfare. Part Two of the book includes a series of reflections from scholars who were invited to give personal thoughts on the impact of Mills's writings in their sociological work, with particular attention to their own 'biography and history'.

With renowned international contributors and expert contributions from a range of specialisms, this book will appeal to academics, students and researchers of sociology.

"An extremely useful tool for serious study of the Old Testament. . . . Commentaries of this nature and especially of this quality not only bridge the chasm between the technicalities of scholarship and the practical situations of preaching, teaching, and worship in churches, but also begin to disturb the status quo in which the use of and reliance upon translations and paraphrases has dulled the church's sense of responsibility toward the study of the Hebrew text. This is one of the most praiseworthy aspects of Chisholm's work. . . . Chisholm deserves much praise for the extent and depth of his commentary."--J. C. Lubbe, Old Testament Essays

"Chisholm proceeds chapter by chapter through each prophetic book (as well as Lamentations and Daniel) and provides an often-detailed summary of its contents plus an analysis of literary themes, linguistic notes, and occasionally historical contexts."--Tyler Mayfield, Religious Studies Review

The words of the prophets
By FrKurt Messick
Like the other books in this series, 'Handbook on the Prophets' is a highly useful and accessible text. Baker Book House also published 'Handbook on the Pentateuch' many years ago, which has become a widely read book, and 'Handbook on the Historical Books' just a few years ago. Chisholm's book is a welcome part of this collection.
This is not a verse by verse commentary on the prophetic books of the Hebrew scripture. Rather, this is a more general commentary that looks as pericopes (logical blocks of text that flow together) as units. Each chapter (or, in the case of the minor prophets, sub-chapter) has an introduction that gives the basic historical and social background, pertinent linguistic and literary information, and general structural and contextual themes.
The longest chapter, as befits its subject among the prophets, is on Isaiah. This gives a good indication of the kind of commentary Chisholm produces. In the discussion on the authorship of Isaiah, he puts forward the theory that the author of 'First Isaiah' (Isaiah 1-39) is different from the author of 'Second Isaiah' (Isaiah 40-66); perhaps there is even an 'Third Isaiah' (Isaiah 56-66) distinct from the other two. However, Chisholm prefers the more traditional idea that there is but one author of Isaiah. Rather than dealing with the multiple-author theory, he rather sets it forward as a scholarly possibility, but concentrates his writing on the single-author text. From this, one can see from this that Chisholm's interpretative framework is a more traditional and conservative one, but not one that does excludes alternatives.
One of the strengths of this text lies in the bibliographies -- this commentary is not a book by scholars for scholars, but does not ignore that consideration. After each section there are bibliographies of commentaries and of recent studies. Chisholm tends to include works published after the 1980s, so this is a good snapshot of work done in the past decade.
This book is really aimed for the working minister, the individual and group-studying bible reader, and perhaps undergraduate students. It avoids the most advanced and technical language that tends to be the exclusive province of professional scholars and graduate students, yet it does not condescend or lack for insight because of this.

A commentary for all
By Brett V.
(PLEASE NOTE - THIS REVIEW WAS POSTED UNDER JOSH PLAZAK'S NAME, MY ROOMMATE, ACCIDENTALLY)

Chisholm's commentary proved insightful and will be a good resource for me in the future regarding my studies in The Word. I look forward to reading some more of his work now that I am a little more familiar with his hermeneutical slant and doctrinal leanings.

The overall outlines of each prophetical book was helpful. However, he or the editor grouped the Minor Prophets in one large heading which made it difficult to reference them as single books (the tops of the pages only said "Minor Prophets" and not the specific minor prophet). Even so, the outlines of some of the books by Chisholm were unique when compared to other scholars' outlines, making it helpful to see the book more comprehensively.

Chisholm made helpful textual analyses throughout his commentary, citing various places where questionable translating occurred in certain versions (often the NIV). He also showed his acumen analyzing the Hebrew text itself. These were often very technical footnotes which would be of value, I would assume, for those who are well versed in studying the ancient Hebrew text.

His one leaning that seemed questionable, though, was his tendency that seemed to generalize large portions of prophetical scripture as merely language used for exaggerated effect. It is not that Chisholm did not evaluate and comment on various opinions on texts that he believed were better off seen as exaggerations - he did take time to do this. However, in some cases his stance to see certain passages as merely "exaggerations for effect" seemed to ignore or not account better for specific details that implicitly seemed to require more of an explanation that one of hyperbole.

The other bittersweet part of Chisholm's commentary is his desire, it seems, to allow for beginning level students of The Word taste The Word fully. For those who have perhaps spent a couple years in study of Scripture (like myself), some of his comments seemed redundant. Even so, he would at other times jump from redundant comments about God's work in the past (which should never get old J) and then discuss deep theological tenets and textual issues, grabbing the attention of the more novice reader, perhaps even advanced.

I will be likely referencing this book in the future and look forward to reading more Chisholm. His bibliography at the end of each book is also helpful. It is a valuable and insightful resource to see the number of articles and commentaries out there on The Prophets.

Review of Chisholm
By A Customer
Throughout the semester the text Chisholm's Handbook on the prophets has been a valuable resource for me as far as research and collecting a different opinion goes. This book offers a thorough and insightful introduction for any student studying the Old Testament Prophetic literature. Rather than attempting to provide a detailed verse-by-verse commentary, this handbook focused on the prevailing themes and central messages of the prophetic books. In the text, Chisholm starts every chapter with a brief analysis of the historical and social setting of the book under discussion. Chisholm works his way through the writings describing the structure, content, and important concepts found in the text. Chisholm made it vital to examine and review critical issues whenever they are important for the interpretation of a particular passage. However, he focused more broadly on the theological themes that characterize the work as a whole. Students in seminary and of the advanced biblical studies would find this volume enlightening and extremely helpful as they make their way through the prophetical books. This handbook on the prophets will also be a good resource for pastors and teachers to use in their teaching and research of this portion of scripture.

Review
"This book's exceptional clarity earned it the highest honor in the Communications category. It is organized and written to appeal specifically to landscape architects who have been trained in traditional representation methods on the drafting table but who would like to work effectively in digital media. The jury clearly saw the book's value. "It's the first drawings book I've seen that is contemporary and clear", one juror said." (Landscape Architecture Magazine, September 2012)

"Digital Drawing is a sophisticated digital media book focused primarily on creating photomontage images for site design. This book, aims to be a software neutral and has a strong, theory-based designer's point of view. This is the first landscape architecture book available as an eBook, so the authors thoroughly embrace modern communication tools while still holding to the tried-and-true landscape architecture values of high-quality graphic representation." Strong Book For Digital Workflow
By ETC
Concise, well-written book that bridges the gap for new learners and more seasoned digital renderers. Cantrell and Michaels offer a fantastic overview of how to improve workflow speed and the finished product. Some underlying knowledge of the Adobe Suite is necessary, but will still be beneficial for those new to importing .pdfs from CAD to Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Loads of helpful images, well-described how-to's, and tricks that will give your projects an extremely impressive look. Minor quibble, a couple of sections feel "rushed" toward the end as far as the steps. For instance, the collage section feels like it could have had a bit more detail and polish like some of the earlier sections. Again, minor, minor issue. Otherwise, go for it without regret. For Landscape Arch students, this is a must. Consider it the digital version of Grant Reid's Landscape Graphics.

Great Book!
By curtis43d
Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture gives you a good understanding of how to use a variety of programs in conjunction with each other. It gives good examples of what program to use for specific graphic presentations and does so in a very clear and concise way. Many of the techniques discussed can easily be applied to disciplines other than Landscape Architecture and I would highly recommend the book to anyone involved in creating digital graphic presentations for any of the design professions. I teach a course a course called "Integrated Computer Graphics" and I plan on using it for my main text. Well done!

Spain at War: The Spanish Civil War in Context 1931-1939, by A. Shubert, G. Esenwein

The Spanish Civil War (July 1936-April 1939) killed several hundred thousand soldiers and civilians and created psychological scars that would take over half a century to heal. Here, two of the ablest young historians of modern Spain examine the ill-fated Second Republic (1931-1936) and its tragic aftermath in their full historical background. Alongside the military and political dimensions, the book breaks new ground in exploring such themes as the impact of the war on gender relations; the varieties of terrorism; and the role of propaganda.

Illuminating - but a candle, not a lantern
By mbinvta
SPAIN AT WAR is a fascinating book that I was assigned to read while taking Spanish history in college, but that I subsequently enjoyed and reread several times afterward, even writing notes in the margins in order to deepen my understanding of the themes. It is a British book, so ultimately it is from foreigners' perspectives and a little stereotyping is probably inevitable. Still, you certainly do not have to be a Spaniard (and I am not) to be thrilled by the descriptions and have your imagination challenged. It is a must-read for anyone, anywhere in the world, who wants to more fully understand not only the Spanish Civil War, but World War II and class and political conflicts in the modern world as well.

What is perhaps the most interesting aspect of this book is that it offers a snapshot of the 1930s that most Americans would not be likely to hear from their grandparents' or great-grandparents' reminiscences, or from nostalgic Hollywood period films or TV shows. The countercultural 1960s could hardly compare to all the social dislocations and ideological turmoil that rocked Europe during the Great Depression years, especially in countries such as Germany, Italy, or (of course) Spain. Though in one sense it was a time of great violence and injustice, there also existed many forms of liberation - for the poor, for freethinkers on both ends of the political spectrum, and (perhaps most dramatically of all) for women. It was a truly exciting period in history, when ordinary people felt empowered by their beliefs and were willing to fight, kill, and die for them. As you read the groundbreaking accounts - some of which were not even analyzed by historians until the 1990s, when this book was published - you can see the militiamen and guerrillas in their incendiary finery, and almost hear their angry shouts and proud protest songs and anthems, and you feel exhilarated.

The authors examine the Spanish Civil War as the paradox it really was: both an issue peculiar to Spain and one that was profoundly influenced by events taking place outside Spanish borders. They describe how a widening gap between Spanish conservatives and liberals (and, to a lesser extent, Castilian Spaniards and other ethnic groups indigenous to Spain) ultimately became irreconcilable, and how the stakes for which both groups were fighting eventually spilled over into the rest of Europe, bringing France, Britain, Italy, Germany, Russia, and even the United States into the controversy to varying degrees. By the time the war ended in 1939, it had essentially become a struggle between fascism and (Soviet) communism, even though both of those forces had scarcely been involved in the civil war to begin with!

But anyone who would think that everything one would ever need to know about 1930s Spain can be found in this book is sorely mistaken. The authors fall short in presenting a truly universal point of view, which is perhaps understandable in light of the very limited scholarly resources that were available to them when they began their research. Their biggest shortcoming is that they too often succumb to political stereotyping and even caricature. While some have accused SPAIN AT WAR of promoting a left-wing political bias, the Communist International actually comes in for some of the harshest criticism in this work. Although the authors do try to be fair, they ultimately make it sound as if everyone who fought for the Republican (anti-fascist) side became a tool (sometimes willing, sometimes not) of the Soviet Union, and that they either participated in the anti-bourgeois, anti-Catholic atrocities or returned to their home countries as disillusioned burnouts. Right-wingers who were involved in the conflict get shortchanged even more badly: they're stereotyped as either social conservatives, Roman Catholic zealots, wealthy elitists, or complete idiots (or, to use the authors' own choice phrase, "backwoodsmen"). Very, very little time is given to the populist and even radical roots of fascism in both Spain and in Europe in general; it's perfunctorily stated that Generalissimo Francisco Franco's elitist forces quickly shut down and even terminated the Falanque (Spanish fascist) "street-fighting" faction, but that's the last we ever hear of them. Fascism and communism alike were visionary, transformative movements that - their many unsavory aspects notwithstanding - featured stark class divisions even within themselves, and did not always conform to the standard totalitarian tropes that everyone is familiar with thanks to characterizations of Hollywood supervillains and the rhetoric seen and heard at antiwar protests and Tea Party rallies.

SPAIN AT WAR is quite enlightening, and certainly preferable as a historical document to many of the more famous books and movies about 1930s Europe (particularly Ernest Hemingway's FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, a ridiculously sanitized portrayal that you will have great difficulty taking seriously after reading this book). Even so, it paints a decidedly incomplete picture and can never hope to compare to the memories of people who were actual eyewitnesses (and who, unfortunately, are for the most part dead now). But, to paraphrase Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) in CASABLANCA, we'll always have Barcelona, where partisans of all varieties plastered buildings around the city with color-splashed modernist propaganda posters (sort of the 1930s equivalent of hippie psychedelia). And we'll always have Zaragoza, where ex-cons from the local penitentiary fought side by side with law-abiding citizens against an invading enemy. And we'll certainly always have Madrid, which turned into something that put 1920s Chicago to shame as glorified street gangs fought from building to building, even seizing luxury hotels as their "turf" and opening them to the public. The 1930s were a crazy, confrontational, circus-like time for Spain, and they will always stand as a testament to what human beings can get themselves into when they really cut loose - and we are all the richer as thinking creatures to have the authors of this book somewhat clumsily try to stage it all for us.

Disappointing
By A Customer
Unfortunately a very superficial and biased account of that violent conflict. The authors often omit important facts to further their own idealogical agenda (pro-Republican in this case.)One cannot help but recieve the impression that the authors fail to fully comprehend and analyze certain key aspects and motivations involved (Carlism or the violence and character of the Republican religious persecution are notable examples.)The bibliography is useful but fails to include the groundbreaking and fresh scholarship of Warren Carroll and some others on the topic. This book is of very limited value to the serious student of the period (1931-1939).

The Lost Boy and the Monster (Picture Books), by Craig Kee Strete

Old Foot-Eater has been living in the forest forever, so it was only a matter of time before he ensnared the lost boy. But the lost boy has been making friends with the scorpion and the rattlesnake, and it is because of his kindness that he might be able to escape becoming lunch for the awful old monster.

Dramatic paintings by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher (illustrators of the best-selling My Many Colored Days, by Dr. Seuss and Cat You Better Come Home, by Garrison Keillor) bring to life the clash of the generous boy and the greedy beast.

From Publishers Weekly
Strete's (They Thought They Saw Him) unremarkable tale with dramatic artwork introduces Old Foot Eater, a monster whose diet consists of "little children's feet." The beast hangs a sticky rope from a tree to ensnare the feet of unsuspecting young passersby. Wandering near the monster's tree one day, a lost boy "who had no name" encounters a rattlesnake and a scorpion. Both are amazed that the child does not harm them ("Aren't you going to beat me with a stick?" each asks the boy) and each in turn thanks the boy "for letting me be me." The creatures repay the boy's kindness when his feet get caught up in the monster's rope, and they help to set him free. Johnson and Fancher (My Many Colored Days; The Frog Prince, Continued) use mixed media to create paintings that seem at once sophisticated and primitive. Featuring a palette of tawny earth tones, the artists incorporate a top border filled with symbols from cave paintings and Southwestern petroglyphs. A particularly theatrical spread shows the boy dangling upside-down against a backdrop of the monster's face. As accomplished as the artwork is, however, it cannot carry the thin story line. Ages 4-8. (May)

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-Strete crafts a tale wherein good defeats evil not through the hero's cleverness but because of his respect for nature. A lost boy who lives alone in the forest is saved from a horrible monster, Foot Eater, by a rattlesnake and a scorpion. The nameless waif's "favor" to these normally persecuted creatures had been in refraining from beating them, a gesture that earned their loyalty. Johnson and Fancher's oil paintings, bordered by strips of stylized petroglyphs, effectively convey the limited action of the text but the earth tones often blend together, making it hard to tell what's going on in the two-page spreads. The boy's face is cherubic and his eyes seem vacant, visually complementing the platitudes he utters; the skeletal monster is sufficiently jagged. It's nice that these desert creatures feel compelled to come to the boy's rescue but one can't help wondering why they didn't just warn their new spiritual brother about Foot Eater's trap in the first place. This superficial tale of harmony is an object lesson that borders on the preachy but the stony monster should give youngsters a delightful chill or two.
John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Strete pens an ode to tolerance that is none too subtle, but the stunning artwork from Johnson and Fancher should keep viewers involved. The story is a parable couched as a Native American tale, in which a boy (identified by Strete as lost and without a name, although why this is important is never made clear) comes across a rattlesnake and a scorpion, both of whom wonder why the boy doesn't kill them: ``Why should I do that? Snakes belong in this world just like me.'' Scorpions, too, the boy chirps. The venomous critters adopt the boy as a brother and when he gets trapped by the Old Foot Eater, a monster who lives in a medicine basket on top of a tree, catching his quarry with a sticky rope, the rattlesnake and scorpion come to his rescue and seal the monster's doom. Good deeds fly thick and fast here, but without context. The illustrations draw their hues from the American southwest, while the paint is scratched to convey a sense of age and animation, and the monster is a ghoulish, block-headed, spine-chilling delight. Good, Not Great
By A Customer
It's a fun story for the young ones, and the illustrations are fabulously entertaining. The story itself with the ugly monster and creepy crawlers makes it engaging and sure to keep the interest of kids. But the book makes me wonder why the main character appears to be a Native American boy. This doesn't appear to be relevant to the story, though the illustrator's note mentions that some of the art was inspired by Native American art. Which group or tribe?

I bought this book knowing that it was used. I've never bought a used book before. When I received it, it was very obviously used. That said, The content of the book, the story of the capture of Adolph Eichmann is riveting. It is more than amazing how the Israeli's were able to capture him in Argentina and bring back to Israel, put him on trial and find justice. It is an unbelievable part of history that everyone should know about. I recommend it highly.
