The Renaissance composer and organist Thomas Morley (c.1557-1602) is best known as a leading member of the English Madrigal School, but he also built a significant business as a music publisher. This book looks at Morley's pioneering contribution to music publishing in England, inspired by an established music printing culture in continental Europe. A student of William Byrd, Morley had a conventional education and early career as a cathedral musician both in Norwich and at St Paul's cathedral. Morley lived amongst the traders, artisans and gentry of England's major cities at a time when a market for recreational music was beginning to emerge. His entrepreneurial drive combinedwith an astute assessment of his market resulted in a successful and influential publishing business. The turning point came with a visit to the Low Countries in 1591, which gave him the opportunity to see a thriving music printpublication business at first hand. Contemporary records provide a detailed picture of the processes involved in early modern music publishing and enable the construction of a financial model of Morley's business. Morley died too young to reap the full rewards of his enterprise, but his success inspired the publication by his contemporaries of a significant corpus of readily available recreational music for the public. Critical to Morley's successwas his identification of the sort of music, notably the Italianate lighter style of madrigal, that would appeal to amateur musicians. Surviving copies of the original prints show that this music continued to be used for severalgenerations: new editions in modern notation started to appear from the mid eighteenth century onwards, suggesting that Morley truly had the measure of the market for recreational music. Thomas Morley: Elizabethan Music Publisher will be of particular interest to scholars and students of renaissance music, as well as the history of music publishing and print.

About the Author
Ira Pohl is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. His research interests include artificial intelligence, the C and C++ programming languages, practical complexity problems, heuristic search methods, deductive algorithms, and educational and social issues. He originated error analysis in heuristic search methods and deductive algorithms. Professor Pohl was formerly a Mackay professor at University of California- Berkeley and a ZWO fellow in the Netherlands. For those who are weary of jargon filled books that promise to teach you C++ in 3 days or whatever- get this book! It makes no pretensions of any sort, but if you study it undisturbed for a few hours , you will have most of your questions about C++ answered. Amazingly deep insight in a deceptively dimunitive book

Great but tough

Elegant, challenging, and thoughtful. The exercises at the end of each chapter are very useful. One of the few books available that fully explains one why C++ is structured the way it is and why one should take advantage of its unique features. It is tough going because the author assumes that the reader will work hard. I like that but was often puzzled by various items and found myself going to other books for less terse explanations.

thorough analysis of a social and environmental disaster

A thorough examination of the consequences of the tar sands project in Alberta. The author looks at this situation from a number of angles, including the project's water and methane usage, the wasting of the Athabascan watershed and millions of acres of boreal forest, the ruinous air quality in the area where the bitumen is refined, the devastation of community and economy in the area surrounding Fort McMurray, the contribution dirty oil makes to climate change, the possibility of nuclear reactors being used simply to help power the project, the failure of the project to benefit the citizens of Alberta, the redirection of the oil itself to the United States, and the growing "Saudi Arabization" of Canada and particularly of Alberta.

My biggest complaint with the book is that the author all but ignored making any consideration for the Dene people, whose ancestral land is being turned into a moonscape in the name of "energy security". I also disliked the author's nonsensical belief that driving less is an effective means of helping to halt the tar sands project. As a non-driver, I do not believe this. I can understand a corporation using the "It's up to individual consumers to change things" remedy to social and environmental ills, but it's depressing to hear it come from the social and environmental activists themselves.

It's dirty, and it's already a problem.

This book is in the tradition of the muckrakers of a century ago. Other reviewers are correct: this book is biased, and the author has a strong opinion about the USA. None of that negates the accuracy of most of his information. The most basic fact is that in the vast Canadian tar sands there's hundreds of billions, possibly trillions of dollars to be made, and a related smaller fact is that Alberta's government is closely allied with the producers. There can be no doubt that some of the environmental impact is highly negative.

Readers doubtful that there is a problem should Google "tar sands" and read about the process and product. There is a lot of oil and also a lot of pollution resulting. How significant that will be is a matter of interpretation. I agree with the author that it could be catastrophic.

The oil in tar sands is free from the complications of Middle Eastern politics, in a friendly and close-by country. Canada stands to make a great deal of money, so the usual Canadian concern for environment is going to vanish.

Tar Sands aplenty - Can we get some feathers for the Prime Minister and his crew, please?

Nikiforuk writes an excellent background book of the disaster that is the so-called tar sands debacle in Alberta Canada. These tar sands had been known for centuries, early Indigenous travelers used this tar like material to repair their canoes. Then the right wing neoliberal crowd takes over Ottawa, alters laws left and right, force a gag rule on Canadian scientists [just as the Soviet Union used to last Century], and Canada, per capita, has the highest or nearly the highest carbon footprint of any country in the world. The Prime Minister with his Big Oil pals dreams of Canada becoming another Petro-State, maybe along the lines of Saudi Arabia - public beheadings next, I assume? At least any Canadian can learn of the duplicity and outright lies their Federal government. and that's a start.
