Below Expectation

I guess I was the first person who bought your book “MCSA Microsoft Windows 8.1 Complete Study Guide”, in fact I completed reading the book and I would like to give you my feedback, there is no doubt that the author has excellent knowledge in Windows 8.1 based on his experience but he failed in delivering the information to the reader, he assume the reader is mastering windows 8.1 and this book just to refresh his knowledge, also I’ve noticed that he go in more details explaining the old concepts which was used in the previous Operation System but when it comes to new technology or new features in Windows 8.1 he don’t say much and I have to go to the internet to understand because the book did not say much or in other word is not clear, finally in some chapters instead of explaining the point the author confuse the reader.

I prefer to buy Sybex books, but this is the first time to encounter difficulty with Sybex Books, overall I don’t recommend this book.

Worthless for 70-689

While the information in-general is educational, the book was nearly worthless on the 70-689 test I took today. Many of the questions had the incorrect answer in the Appendix, and some of the presented answers were laughable ("Go have a beer and give it a while - geez" was an actual potential answer in this book). Ultimately, this was a waste of money.

I was looking to take the upgrade exam from Windows 7 to Windows 8 but there really aren't any study materials for that test. This may be a better book for someone just getting into desktops but I didn't find it too useful as prep material for the upgrade exam.

But in Harvest for Hope, she scrutinizes human eating behaviors, and the colossal food industries that force-feed some cultures' self-destructive habits for mass consumption. It's an unsustainable lifestyle that Goodall argues must change immediately, beginning--not ironically--at a grassroots level.

Looping personal anecdotes from 40 years of global travels with stories from noble farmer Davids and corporate Goliaths, Goodall methodically builds her case for shopping organic and living modestly. Mustering a tender gumption, she details the vicious cycle of pesticide-ridden and genetically engineered crops which feed the unknowing majority of consumers; and also feed the antibiotic-treated animals that provide these folks with inexpensive entrees. Leaving nasty slaughterhouse scenes to less tactful pens, Goodall focuses more on the product of "factory farming" techniques: mountains of waste, nutritionally depleted soil, polluted water, displaced organic farmers, and severely compromised food.

Hope springs from positive sources: Edible Schoolyard programs in the U.K. and U.S., parents breaking their schools' "unholy alliance" with fast food chains and soft drink companies, a steady rise in organic purchases. Goodall offers many suggestions for rallying others, exercising one's own consumer powers, and just plain eating less meat. Conservationists might say this information is nothing new, which might explain why Goodall provides only tertiary references to her many statistics and facts. Goodall, best known for her decades of work with chimpanzees and baboons, turns to the social significance of the food people eat and of how it reaches our tables. In a style that's both persuasive and Pollyannaish, her guide glides through a quick history of early agriculture, despairs of "death by monoculture" (single-crop farming), warns of the hazards of genetically modified foods and of the disappearance of seed diversity,and bemoans the existence of inhumane animal factories and unclean fish farms—the macro concerns of the environmentally conscious. On a more micro level, she focuses on what individuals can do for themselves. In a grab bag of well-intentioned bromides, Goodall counsels her readers to become vegetarians, celebrates restaurants and grocery stores that seek out locally grown produce, frets about the quality of school lunches and the pervasiveness of fast food–fueled obesity, honors small farmers and warns of a looming water crisis. Most chapters conclude with "what you can do" sections: demand that modified foods be labeled; turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. This book about making healthy choices breaks no new ground, but its jargon-free and anecdote-rich approach makes it a useful primer for grassroots activists, while the Goodall imprimatur could broaden its reach.

Support the local farmers

I loved this book! I have always thought that eating organic was healthier for me and definately tasted better, but this book opened up my eyes on many subjects. First of all, I did not know the difference between light organic [ which large corporations do] verses deep organic [ which small farms do,rotating crops for example, which is better for the soil]. Now,when I shop, I read where the organic food came from so I know how far it had to travel and how much gas was wasted. I have become a firm believer that I should buy from local farmers when ever possible.One last remark I found facinating was when Jane was talking about GMO's and how when animals had the choice of natural food verses genetically modified food, they always chose the natural.Very interesting.

Great Information and Overview

Jane Goodall, the chimpanzee lady, gives an overview of the issues with food, water, transportation of the food, etc. in this book. She does a good general job of explaining the issues. She discusses how crops are raised and used, how animals are raised and treated, genetic engineering, organic growing practices, how food is distributed, fast food and water! She uses an anecdotal style with facts and studies to back the stories up. However, the facts are not always referenced in a way the one could easily follow up. Overall, I liked the amount of information she conveyed in a very readable way.

Eye Opening

This book was a revelation to me. It is well written and informative, it adresses all the enviornmental issues the world is facing due to the demand for cheap, instant food as well as the corporate world's role. As sobering as this knowledge is, Mrs Goodall writes with a gentle and hopeful outlook and gives good suggestions as to how to make a difference in small ways. I highly recommend reading this to anyone who is interested in their own health or that of the enviornment.

Very generalized overview, but not really practical or detailed

It was an OK overview and introduction to home automation, but did not give anyone skills for practical planning. It was too generalized and had more info on full automation systems which should be considered a professional installation, not DIY. And even for DIY, it was more theory/information rather than practical info. I didn't expect any specific 'this is how you install a wall switch', but also didn't expect what was given, which was 'you could install a wall switch or do a plug in'.

Most adults of the internet generation will find this way too basic.

I'm going to put some smart lighting systems with some appliance controls into to my home. I was hoping to de-mystify the issue and get pros and cons of all the Insteon, WeMo, Wink, Phillips Hue, and those types of systems, etc. Since this was published in the last 6 months, I had hoped for up-to-date info. Very little of this was mentioned. I'm not criticizing the book for that however. I'm just saying that's why I bought it and letting prospective readers know what it was not.

With a Nov 2015 publication date, this is an up to date overview of smart home systems, and being up to date is a really important feature in such a book. Great overview if you want something reasonably objective (not a manufacturer advertisement) to figure out what type of smart home systems are out there.

Postmodernism, he shows, has given us a new sense of the superficial, one in which the issue is not the absence of meaning but its uncontrollable, ecstatic proliferation.

A professor at Williams College, Taylor is a truly interdisciplinary thinker whose work draws on theology, art and architecture, linguistics, literary criticism, fashion, technology, and even tattoos. In Hiding, he takes these diverse influences and weaves a virtual web of postmodern delights. Postmodernism, he shows, has given us a new sense of the superficial, one in which the issue is not the absence of meaning but its uncontrollable, ecstatic proliferation. Conceived and developed with designers Michael Rock and Susan Sellers, this work transgresses the boundary that customarily separates graphic design from the story within a text and embodies the very tendencies it analyzes.

Ahead of its time

I first resisted Hiding. I wanted to disapprove of its subject matter (skin, mystery novels, fashion, Vegas, and on!). I really tried not to like it. But it's grown on me in ways that I find quite challenging. And that challenge is what's best about it.
There was a review in BookForum about Hiding that couldn't let go of the central tenet of this cunning book: surface is not to be underestimated. Surface (as opposed to depth) is not simply a dead-end but the beginnings of a new worldview. While older worryworts and curmudgeonly librarian types may protest this premise, sorry, I've got five words for all of you: Sean "Puffy" Combs, Grammy Winner.
The layout of the book is as provocative as its content: our current state of affairs. Supermodels are celebrities, COPS is reality television, Las Vegas is a family getaway, tattooing is our youth's version of long hair. All of these topics get brought up and explored in studied and thoughtful detail. Yet, Taylor doesn't dissect these cultural changes from a sterile laboratory atop an ivory tower -- he digs right into it. His section on fashion reads like it's a special pullout to W magazine (let's see that happen!) and you don't need a dictionary to make sense of the fundamental mysteries being wrestled with throughout this fast-paced tome.
It can be difficult, at times, to make sense of some of the more poetic or lyrical moments but then I also don't care much for rap or French cinema. All in all, I'd put this (quite beautiful to look at) book right up there with anything Barthes has written -- with the added bonus that this is an enthusiastically eclectic and sincerely postmodern collage.

A positive alternative to Baudrillard's dim view of the postmodern condition can be found in Mark C. Taylor's 1997 book HIDING--a philosophical re-visoning of our contemporary Western society that instead of clinging to vestigial epistemic notions of depth and foundationalism, embraces a holistic, worldwide web view of social structures. By way of an extended, elaborate metaphor that describes our ontological condition as being intimately related to our embryonic development (we are nothing more than layers of skin upon layers of skin, ad infinitum), Taylor suggests a new epistemic outlook that no longer makes an issue of depths, but rather focuses upon the complex relationship of interactive, interacting phenomena--in his phrase, "the profundity of surface." Emergent, virtual technologies retroactively point to our own socially constructed "reality" as always-already virtual itself, and to get caught up in the trap of defining contemporary phenomena in terms of outdated analytical models will only succeed in an inescapably circular logic; as he puts it, "After (the) all has been said and done, the question that remains is not `What is virtual reality?' but `What is not virtual reality?' (267). This shift in focus allows us to give our undivided attention to the realm of practice, to aesthetics, to surface; like Slavoj Zizek in TARRYING WITH THE NEGATIVE, Taylor would have us interface with things-in-themselves, allowing us to become aware of our positioning within a complex web of relations between phenomena, as well as what that positioning will allow us to do.
