Quantum: Einstein, Bohr, and the Great Debate about the Nature of Reality, by Manjit Kumar

“A lucid account of quantum theory (and why you should care) combined with a gripping narrative.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Quantum theory is weird. As Niels Bohr said, if you weren’t shocked by quantum theory, you didn’t really understand it. For most people, quantum theory is synonymous with mysterious, impenetrable science. And in fact for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly written account of this fundamental scientific revolution, focusing on the central conflict between Einstein and Bohr over the nature of reality and the soul of science. This revelatory book takes a close look at the golden age of physics, the brilliant young minds at its core—and how an idea ignited the greatest intellectual debate of the twentieth century. 16 pages of photographs

Starred Review. With vigor and elegance, Kumar describes the clash of titans that took place in the world of physics in the early 20th century, between physicists who did and those who did not believe in the quantum—the strange concept that we now know to be the underpinning of reality. The titans in Kumar's account of the conflict are Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr. In 1900, Max Planck discovered that electromagnetic radiation and the energy of light are transmitted not in a continuous flow but in small packets called quanta (singular, quantum). Bohr applied the idea of quantum to electrons, leading to the development of quantum mechanics. Bohr's theory explained experimental results that were inexplicable in classical theory. Einstein rejected Bohr's theory overturning reality in dangerous but also thrilling ways. The clash culminated at the 1927 Solway conference. Kumar, founding editor of Prometheus and a consulting science editor for Wired UK, recounts this meaty, dense, exciting story, filled with vivid characters and sharp insights. With physics undergoing another revolution today, Kumar reminds us of a time when science turned the universe upside down. 16 pages of photos. (May)

*Starred Review* “A first rate mind, extremely critical and far-seeing.” Einstein quickly sizes up the mental powers of Danish scientist Neils Bohr. How ironic that Bohr will demonstrate his farseeing vision most compellingly by discrediting Einstein’s own myopia! Kumar recounts Bohr’s astounding triumph over the great German theorist in their debate over quantum physics, thus illuminating a pivotal episode in modern physics. In that episode readers see how quantum mechanics integrates a range of promising but puzzling and seemingly disconnected subatomic discoveries. Readers see, for instance, how a cautious Max Planck reluctantly parcels light into discrete packets and how a befuddled Ernest Rutherford recognizes that only a radically new model of the atom can explain alpha-particle deflections. Though only specialists will understand the technical issues, Kumar keeps the main thread of his narrative accessible to the intelligent general reader, particularly clarifying how Einstein’s belief in objective reality pits him against the daringly agnostic Bohr, who leaves the mysteries of wave-particle duality veiled in statistical probabilities and abstract formulas. Intellectual exhilaration runs high as Einstein repeatedly presses Bohr—posing daunting questions about how to weigh an imaginary box of light and how to explain eerily “entangled” particles. The future of science hangs in the balance: physics becomes high drama. --Bryce Christensen

Review
“Exhilarating. . . . Reading [Quantum] is a bit like lifting the hood of your mind and moving the working parts around; it’s challenging and trippy—as only the Dr. Seuss realm of the quantum can be.” (Laura Miller - Salon)

“As a fairly innumerate non-scientist, I am perversely drawn to books about maths and science and usually abandon them with ignorance intact. However, Quantum by Manjit Kumar … is so well written that I now feel I’ve more or less got particle physics sussed. Quantum transcends genre—it is historical, scientific, biographical, philosophical.” (The Guardian)

“Kumar is an accomplished writer who knows how to separate the excitement of the chase from the sometimes impenetrable mathematics.” (Financial Times)

“[Kumar] leavens the mind-bending with sketches of the remarkable human beings involved in this godlike enterprise.” (Sara Lippincott - Los Angeles Times)

“A necessary, mesmerizing and meticulous volume.” (Sam Coale - Providence Journal)

“Kumar brings lucidity and a sense of drama to what is usually considered by lay readers as an esoteric, bubble-chambered subject. He does this without sacrificing the ‘science of it’ at the altar of readability. The triumphs and the tribulations, the politics and the physics, the humanity and the genius of the protagonists all collide to produce the sort of energy that we usually expect in a Le Carre thriller.” (The Hindustan Times)

“A super-collider of a book, shaking together an exotic cocktail of free-thinking physicists, tracing their chaotic interactions and seeing what God-particles and black holes fly up out of the maelstrom… Provides probably the most lucid and detailed intellectual history ever written of a body of theory that makes other scientific revolutions look limp-wristed by comparison.” (The Independent [UK])

“Lively....Chock-full of colorful characters.” (Graham Farmelo - The New York Times Book Review)

“One of the best guides yet to the central conundrums of modern physics.” (John Banville, author of The Sea)

A brilliant account of a fundamental subject
By Louis Ryan
The development of quantum physics through the 20th century is one of the great adventures of science, and here at last is a book aimed at the layperson which clearly explains its key concepts, while situating the scientific development in its broader setting. The result is a challenging and enthralling read.

Quantum is appropriately sub-titled, Einstein, Bohr and the Great Debate about the Nature of Reality. The long theoretical duel between these two giants of modern physics is a recurring theme of the book, but the story starts before them with the build-up to the discovery of Planck's constant at the turn of the century, and continues beyond their deaths (in 1955 and 1962 respectively) to take in Bell's Theorem and Everett's "many worlds" interpretation. Along the way we meet other great physicists such as Rutherford, Heisenberg, Pauli, Schrödinger, Dirac and Bohm.

One might suspect that a book of such scope would be in danger of being overcrowded with theories and theorists, yet Kumar rises to the challenge, displaying a novelist's sense of pacing allied with an impressive scientific clarity and succinctness. Clearly he has taken to heart the famous injunction attributed to Einstein to "make it as simple as possible, but no simpler!" He also strikes a judicious balance between scientific explanation and human context. This provided for me a welcome alternation between the physics and the lives of the physicists, with each stimulating an interest in the other.

What is so powerful and inspiring about this book is the way it conveys the passion for truth of those great pioneers. No doubt ego played its part as well, they would hardly have been human otherwise, but it is always secondary to the great quest to fathom the nature of sub-atomic reality. Characteristic of this passion is the anecdote of Bohr and Einstein on their first meeting in Copenhagen, straightaway so engrossed in debate that they repeatedly miss their bus-stop. Kumar evidently resonates to this passion, and conveys it vividly in his narrative. Here is an extract from his account of Bohr's first meeting with Schrödinger, one of Einstein's key allies in the great debate:

"After the exchange of pleasantries, battle began almost at once, and according to Heisenberg, `continued daily from early morning until late at night'... During one discussion Schrödinger called `the whole idea of quantum jumps a sheer fantasy'. `But it does not prove there are no quantum jumps,' Bohr countered. All it proved, he continued, was that `we cannot imagine them'. Emotions soon ran high... Schrödinger finally snapped. `If all this damned quantum jumping were really here to stay, I should be sorry I ever got involved with quantum theory.' `But the rest of us are extremely grateful that you did,' Bohr replied, `your wave mechanics has contributed so much to mathematical clarity and simplicity that it represents a gigantic advance over all previous forms of quantum mechanics.'

"After a few days of these relentless discussions, Schrödinger fell ill and took to his bed. Even as his wife did all she could to nurse their house-guest, Bohr sat on the edge of the bed and continued the argument. `But surely Schrödinger, you must see...' He did see, but only through the glasses he had long worn, and he was not about to change them for ones prescribed by Bohr."

This book is a brilliant and compelling account of the genesis of quantum physics, but it is more than that. In the midst of today's pervasive cynicism and disorientation, it is an inspiring reminder of what the human spirit is capable of when it devotes itself passionately to the highest aim, that of understanding the truth of our reality.

The entanglement of classical and quantum realities
By Rama Rao
The great Einstein-Bohr debate about physical reality is interesting not only to physicists, but also to great many readers interested in understanding the nature. This discussion between Bohr and Einstein over the interpretation of quantum theory began in 1927 at the fifth Solvay Conference. The debate over the ability of quantum theory to describe nature was fueled by many leading physicists of the time, some of whom directly contributed to the development of quantum physics, but later found themselves arguing against the theory they helped to create. Notable examples include Erwin Schrodinger, Paul Dirac, and Max Planck; the latter two did not actively participate in challenging the quantum reality. Bohr and Einstein spent many years intensely debating the nature of reality, and their discussions are known for very famous Einstein's comments such as; "God does not play dice,' or "God is slick, but he ain't mean," and Bohr's response was "don't bring God into this (discussion of quantum physics)." Bohr argued vigorously against both deterministic and realistic world, but Einstein was equally adamant to defend these two physical and philosophical concepts. Deterministic philosophy was spurred by Newtonian mechanics; if we know a system and its physical properties (size, color, or position) at one point in time, then at some point in future we can predict the system based on these physical properties. Bohr argued that complete knowledge of the present can result only in a description of what the future most probably will be like, but there is no such thing as certainty in quantum world. This thought is mystified by what is commonly called Copenhagen interpretation, and its strong proponents were Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and Max Born. Classical reality envisioned by Einstein was supported to a certain level by Schrödinger. Recent historical research shows that Paul Dirac had his own doubts about Copenhagen school of thought (1), and Max Planck, the founding father of quantum physics, lived until 1947 did not participate directly in Einstein-Bohr debate because of his own insecurities about quantum reality. When experimental test for Bell's inequality was conducted by Alain Aspect and others, many thought that Einstein was definitely wrong, but recent advances say, not so fast. Physicist Roger Penrose and many others believe that quantum physics is an incomplete theory (2). Few weeks ago when Large Hadron Collider (LHC) conducted test runs, Stephen Hawking expressed pessimism of finding Higgs Boson in LHC experiments by stating that "I think it will be much more exciting if we don't find the Higgs. That will show something is wrong, and we need to think again. I have a bet of 100 dollars that we won't find the Higgs." In a poll conducted in 1999 at Cambridge University, 55% of physicists polled for none of the existing quantum interpretations are right. This shows that not everything is settled in quantum physics.

History of quantum physics is the best example to understand how scientists work. Their collective efforts to understand the universe we live in through publications, conferences, discussions correspondence and collaborative efforts are essential to scientific advancement. The author describes these things well in the book, but he falls short in certain areas; his current work uses previously published works of Max Jammer (3), Jagdish Mehra and Helmut Rechenberg (4) as his few sources of information, but he could have researched a little more by talking to people who were directly associated with Einstein or Bohr. In a recent book by Louisa Gilder (5), after interviewing a colleague of Boris Podolsky, she reported that Rosen or Podolsky never asked Einstein for his permission when they published the classic Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen paper, 'Can Quantum Mechanical Description of Physical Reality Be Considered Complete." It is also stated elsewhere that Einstein never thought this was going to be a paper; the ideas came out during informal discussions (6). The author discusses the results of crucial experiments such as tests of Bell's theorem, and other work that may have lead to confusions or mistakes.

Many who are familiar with the history of quantum physics think that even though Einstein is unquestionably the best scientist mankind has ever seen but they also believe that he was grumpy old man who did not appreciate new and novel ideas in physics. This is certainly not true according to physicists who knew him. He helped Max Planck in the development of early ideas such as quantized energy levels in quantum physics. Einstein was not against new ideas such as the probabilistic or statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics, but the denial of an independent reality bothered him immensely. This lead to another famous quote from Einstein: "I think that a particle must have a separate reality independent of the measurements. That is an electron has spin, location and so forth even when it is not being measured. I like to think that the moon is there even if I am not looking at it." The author resurrects these ideals of Einstein hastily when he discusses experimental tests of Bell's theorem. He concludes that Einstein's doubts about the completeness of quantum mechanics are vindicated.

Great read
By V Drucker
Kumar's book on the history of early twentieth century physics and atomic theory skips from page to page, fleshing out scientific expanations with vivid descriptions of the key protagonists. It is a real skill to make sophisticated scientific theories accessible to the lay person, but Kumar's use of metaphor helps bring the most intangible concepts to life. This is a modern classic, but more important, a really fun read.

One of the most vicious gangsters to ever walk the streets of Newark is free to roam again after serving a 15 year prison sentence. Respected and feared by all, and loved by only a few, the Black Charles Manson was sentenced to death by lethal injection after his conviction for a trail of gruesome murders. The streets were finally able to breathe freely, believing that he would die in prison. His fate was sealed - until he met another Newark legend, the notorious kingpin, the Mayor. The Mayor controlled a great percentage of Newark's heroin trade for only five years as a free man, but as a Federal prisoner, he managed to control that trade for over a decade and a half. From behind bars, the Mayor spent over a quarter of a million dollars cash to secure Manson's freedom. In return for the funding, Manson offered his lifesaver control of his army to use at his disposal. Once the Mayor was finally released, Manson submitted his army over to him as promised. With the Mayor's high quality heroin coupled with Manson's army behind him, they had the perfect recipe for success. Manson issued strict orders for his army to provide 24-hour protection over the Mayor. Somehow his orders were disregarded and the Mayor was assassinated. How or by whom, Manson has not a clue. For years he's sat in prison praying he could get back on the streets to get revenge. Now, his prayers have been answered. As a free man, Manson discovers the code of the streets have changed drastically, and the hit on the Mayor came from within Manson's own camp. A man on a mission; will he track the murderer down and have his revenge, or will he be devoured by the new era of gangsters and meet the same fate as the Mayor? VOLUME 2

Bottom line is that this book is a MUST READ!
By Amazon Customer
Block Party 5K1 Book Two by Al-Saadiq Banks picks up right where book one left off and again there is a major adrenaline rush filled within these pages. I thoroughly enjoyed both books, but book two definitely brought everything full circle and the a lot of questions were answered and there many OMG moments that had me anxiously awaiting to see what was going to happen next. What I enjoyed about this series was that this story was set in modern day theme and it made the story line that more enjoyable for me. I read all of the stories in this series and what makes Al-Saadiq different as a writer is because he is emotionally connected with these characters and they are extremely well developed to the point that the dialogue and verbiage are on point, everything is true to life. Bottom line is that this book is a MUST READ!

All hail the king (again)
By s. sinclair
Just when you think Mr. Banks has done it all, he delivers again. 5k1 is the quintessential street book that vividly captures the tone of the streets today. The Mayor - one of the BEST characters in ANY series- is nearly outdone by the Black Charles Manson. In book two, he lives up to his name! You see why he's so feared. The international twist is a pleasant surprise too, as it deals with a very real social issue. All in all, Mr. BANKS shows why he is the king of this lit s***!

faulty premise leads to other faulty teachings
By audie
I received a free copy of this book through the Destiny Image Book Review program.

The main problem with this book is that it's based on a faulty premise. "Yes, the Voice of God speaks to true intercessors", p. 38. "The Voice has much to say; as we hear, feel, and respond to the Voice, Heaven and Earth are forever changed." p. 41. We must let the River of His Voice literally gush forth from deep within our spirits, and then flow out to the spiritual wasteland that is all around us." p. 12

The problem with this striving to hear some kind of voice inside of us is this--the Bible never tells us to do that. When God spoke to the prophets and apostles, He did not do so through some ultra-quiet, difficult to hear inner voice. He came in instances like the burning bush, He gave them dreams and visions, He spoke directly to them. Even when he spoke to the prophet Elijah in a still, quiet voice, he did not speak to him with quiet inner voice, but with a voice that the prophet heard with his ears. God's messages to them were clear, they did not have some vague inner feelings that they had to try to create some interpretations for.

Seeing this faulty premise, it's easy to see how much of the rest of the book goes astray. For example, he tries to create a type of elite "true intercessors" that the Bible says nothing about, and the things he teaches about these "true intercessors" are rather odd. "True intercessors don't take prayer requests." p. 40. Really? Ok, I'll be sure to not tell any "true intercessor" my concerns. "There is only one allegiance, to God alone. Personal desires have no place counseling God." p. 40. Considering that it is God Himself who has invited us to "let your request be made known to God", then I can only think that there is certainly a place for letting God know our personal desires. It may be said that our prayers should be about more than just our wants, but there seems to be no biblical call for us to try to be so spiritual that we ignore our own needs and wants.

Another thing he contends has to do with the Most Holy Place. "For instance, if Christ dwells within, why do we sing, "Come into the Holy of Holies" when we are the Holy of Holies?" p. 134. "Our hearts are the Most Holy Place within which the Presence dwells." p. 180. However, he gives no scriptural support for this contention that we are the Holy of Holies, or that our hearts are the Most Holy Place; in fact, the Bible is rather uncomplimentary about the state of our hearts, calling the heart "deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked, more than we can understand".

In his chapter titled "Quiet Anarchy", he writes this about the word "anarchy", "This is the word that many folk fear. If you are one of those people who fear this word, close this book and go home. I am sorry. You are not a world-changer." p. 113. Since I see no place in Scripture where we are called to be world-changers, I see no reason to embrace any form of anarchy; in fact, anarchy is a very ungodly concept. It is the Apostle Paul who told the church that they needed to "do all things decently and in order". The New Testament tells us to obey and submit to rulers. We are not to be leftists who think that chaos is a good thing.

The author makes some strange, unsupported contentions. "At one time, such anarchy was seen as pure heresy, rebellion, and immaturity. At one time, though, anarchy was a way of life for all those who truly loved God and sought diligently for a greater truth; to be a believer in Jesus was to openly oppose the government in power." p. 114. Really? Tell us, please, when and where this time was. No, please, do tell, my curiosity is piqued. I'm actually studying early church history right now, and I really haven't seen any time like this, where the church was fomenting anti-government sentiments.

Or this one, "History shows us that the greatest steps in spiritual renewals and advancements were made by those who were regarded by many as heretics, madmen, or worse." p. 123. Since the author does not show us his claim to be true, then why should we believe that history shows it? Who are these "heretics, madmen and worse" that he wants us to admire? Why does he not name them, so that we may determine for ourselves if they are people to be respected and admired?

Probably the most questionable part of the book is the chapter called "Brink of Heresy", as he pretty much says that experience trumps doctrine. "Whether or not they accept the experience is not the issue, for the experience is my reality, and I will not deny it." p. 137. Welcome to Postmodernism, where the only truth is what you experience to be true. Peter Rollins or Tony Jones could write that statement, and I'm not complimenting this author when I compare him to those two.

"It's actually too bad that Bible scholars don't subject their mountains of theology to the same tests as they use on the rest of us!" p. 139. What a nonsense statement! True Bible scholars do subject their doctrine to the same test, "What do the Scriptures say?". That's the test, that's the only test, and that's why this author's teachings fail. "The decision to put their studies above what they witness with their own eyes is both frightening and arrogant." p. 139 The decison to put experiences above sound biblical doctrine is unwise, and arrogant.

While every now and again he does come up with a bit of something that's interesting, it's simply not worth wading through all the unbiblical ideas and mystical mush that he tries to feed us. His unsupported claims make his book come off more as propoganda than any kind of serious biblical teaching. His claim that experience trumps doctrine is a sure road to failure.

Strategies to clearly hearing the voice of God
By Valerie Caraotta
Indeed The Voice of the Lord is calling us, His Beloved today to position ourselves and prostrate ourselves before Him in humility so He can speak direction to our hearts. This book by Don Nori Sr.will invite the reader to flow in the mighty river of His presence where it will cleanse, purify and bring change to our lives and the lives of those around us. If your heart is yearning for more of Him than allow this book to challenge your mindset and equip you with tools and awareness needed to advance deeper into the voice and heart of God. It is not a book that will keep you in the outer court; rather, it will invite your free will to dig deeper in intercession, to allow brokenness to work through you leading to fruitfulness, and to enter a true union with Him with outward focus on others. In essence, it's a plunge toward the most Holy place where He desires all of us to reside.

Learn the value and necessity of brokenness and how that will draw you to other people who will need your discernment. As brokenness teaches us to repent, so too, Nori shares, should repentance become a lifestyle. He states "Your yieldedness to Him will determine what you will experience together with Him.". You will be taught to submit to the Lord's leading and pray according to His will.

This book will stimulate your heart and ways of doing things while exhorting you to adopt a lifestyle of humility. With Biblical examples displayed, the value of David, Moses, and Jacob's journeys will teach how today to best position ourselves to make lasting kingdom impact. Author Nori says it best: "Say yes to the driving force within your heart and you will discover many new and wonderful things that He is ready to reveal to you."
This book was given as a gift from Destiny Image Publishers in exchange for a fair, honest review.

If you want to hear God read this.
By David P Rollings
This is an important book that the body of Christ needs to take notice of, but I fear that it will not be popular in some circles. This is a very realistic book which reflects The authors long walk with the Lord. Don Nori shows us on page after page the need for brokeness and repentance, he avoids any triumphalistic assertions. His honesty makes the book very attractive because he shares his own weakness and is thereby an encouragement to other disciples of the Lord. So often when we read books about hearing God we find a nice neat formula but this is avoided because our author is more concerned about our relationship with the L:ord than with techniques. If you read this book with an open heart you will receive much good instruction that will enable you to hear God more clearly.

He raises a genuine issue about the nature of God's anointing upon our lives, so often we expect some miraculous download but Nori rightly reminds us that through the Holy Spirit God indwells us and therefore we need to be sensitive to the Lord who indwells us and flow in the gifting and grace that he has already imparted to us. In many ways this book is talking in a very practical way about practising the presence of God, this enriches the book and has the potential to be a godly influence in our own lives.

some people will say that the book is too subjective, my reply to this is to remind the reader that there is an essential subjective dimension to the Christian faith the problem occurs when some turn their Christianity into a form of subjectivism, but, Nori avoids this by anchoring all of his teaching in the Word of God. In this regard some will say that Nori does not spell out how to relate Word and Spirit but we must see that the whole book shows us how to do that. The author calls for discernment and he demonstrates by the way that he writes that he is discerning. We need this sort of book to complement those that give more formal teaching.
However I do think that he is overly harsh on theologians, I know that many theologians fit into his description but on the other hand you have writers like Rodman Williams,Larry Hart, and Frank Macchia who have served the Church by giving of their wisdom in a way that promotes renewal in the church. But these comments should not distract from the contents of the book, this is a book that needs to be read by all who want a closer walk with their God.

I plan on keeping this book long after the class is done.
By Jack Petersen
I bought this book for an introduction to engineering class - I thought this would be a "blow-off" class, but it was not. Independent of the class however, this book is great!
I dropped out of highschool, got my GED, went to community college, dropped out of that, and now 8 years later am going to university; this time, I am committed. Whether you are a drop-out or a high-school graduate, this book will teach you new things. Not only new things, but very important things. If you want to succeed in school, not just barely make it, this book will be incredibly helpful if you take it to heart.

Bottom line: I plan on keeping this book long after the class is done. Good luck and stay motivated!
