Family is what you make

Ivy and Jem are back, and things are really getting complicated! Old enemies return with vengeance, and the other shoe falls for Emmy in this third installment. As in the first two books, family is not always the group you are born into, but rather the people you make your own, and this is brought home to Ivy, Jem, and Emmy in some very overpowering ways. As always, there is lots of tea served up with the hope of a better day. I can only hope there will be more about these wonderful people!

A simply wonderful story about believable characters living, loving, surviving in a harsh,prejudice world.
I bought the whole series, I needed to see this saga through to the end.
Throughly enjoyable, every emotion was called upon until the end.

I read the three books of this series in order and enjoyed them a great deal. It's always gratifying when good people succeed. My only complaint is that Book 3 seems to rush. I think the family's American ventures could have filled a fourth book. It would have been a glittering and exciting contrast to the poverty of the earlier books.

I've always loved this collection of Hulk vs Thing stories.This collection contains the first encounter between the two(back when the Hulk was still grey and had only 3 fingers and toes vol.1 F.F.#12)and follows chronically about the next 4 or 5 times they met.Anyways,I love this collection.You'd be hard pressed to find the issues contained within as single issues at this price.

Rich's best

I've been a fan of Simon Rich's ever since I happened upon Ant Farm in a Barnes and Noble. I was excited to hear he'd written a full-length novel, Elliot Alagash, which was enjoyable--but nothing compared to What in God's Name?

Heaven is a douchebag corporate environment, and Angels are corporate douchebags. Even God doesn't care about humans and Earth anymore (Heaven's main profits come from Xenon gas), so he decides to end it all and start his new project: an Asian fusion restaurant.

The Angels are on board with this--all of them except Craig, who painstakingly arranges miracles for humans, and Eliza, newly promoted, who is quickly disillusioned by the way things work in Heaven.

God makes Craig and Eliza a deal: if they can perform a miracle by the end of the month, he will spare the Earth. The miracle happens to be to make awkward New York twenty-somethings Sam and Laura get together. Even though they already want to be together, and even though they have angelic interference, Sam and Laura are difficult to get together because of their fears and insecurities--hilarious, not tragic, fears and insecurities.

What in God's Name is cute without being saccharine. Tropes abound, but they're never cliche. The book features not one, but two adorably socially awkward pairs whose quirks would be annoying in the hands of a lesser writer. But every single one of the characters in the book is remarkably funny and create hilarious scenes.

Despite filling the overused type of lower-ranking office-monkies with hearts of gold, Craig and Eliza are wonderful and fresh protagonists. Same for Sam and Laura: dorky socially awkward characters risk being twee and trite, but Sam and Laura aren't. Their meet cute? Trying not to laugh during an absurd, melodramatic protest about murdered children.

However, the secondary characters, especially Raj (Craig's delivery guy), Raoul (God's easy-going prophet), Vince (Craig's foil) and Regis Philbin (in a brief but significant role) are my favorites.

Yes, the book is predictable, bordering on formulaic despite its unique premise. Every reader will know how it ends and where it is going. But it is consistently hilarious and laugh-out-loud funny (and I don't mean that as a stock phrase), and the formula is skillfully used.

I finished the book too quickly, simply because I couldn't stop reading it, but I will definitely read it again as I wait for Rich's next book.

God is bored

You know that crazy-looking, scraggly guy, hanging out on the side of the road with his "The End is Near" sign? That's Raoul. And he's not crazy. He's God's hand-selected prophet, and he's attempting to pass along to mankind important directives from God. It's clear early on in Simon Rich's, "What in God's Name" that this God is less than enthusiastic about his job. An angel, Eliza, asks God why he would use a man like Raoul, rather than a scientist or a world leader, to convey such critical messages. God just shrugs. He likes Raoul and "if the humans don't want to listen to him, that's their problem."

God didn't create man with any grand designs in mind. He was bored. He created them as personal playthings, but he quickly learned that humans are demanding creatures. He hired angels to tend to the humans, but their needs and wants could never be fully met. The more he gave to humans, the less they appreciated him. Is a blood sacrifice too much to ask? In a moment of frustration, he decides to destroy Earth so he can focus on more rewarding activities.

The angel, Eliza, and her co-worker and fellow miracle-maker, Craig, make a wager with God. If they successfully use their powers to bring two lovelorn humans, Sam and Laura, together, God will call off his attack. Craig and Eliza have their work cut off for them. These humans are plagued with major insecurities and low self-esteem; merely getting them out of their apartments is a challenge.

I hadn't read Simon Rich's earlier work, but I was inspired to read this book after seeing a positive review in Entertainment Weekly. "What in God's Name" is a light, fun read with many laugh out loud moments. Most of the humor comes from the angels' cringing observations of the awkward and socially inept Sam and Laura. Craig and Eliza offer hilarious and biting commentary (like Craig's suggestion to burn down a bar rather than risk Laura witnessing Sam's awful dancing), but they are never cruel. They take their jobs as angels seriously, and they root for Sam and Laura as much as we do. In fact, the potential destruction of the planet became almost a secondary concern to me. The outcome is never in question, but getting there is all the fun.

Empty premise

"What in God's Name: A Novel" is really more of a novella. It makes it to 200 or so pages with short pages and large type. Even so, it runs on longer than necessary. It's like one of those Saturday Night Live skits with a clever premise and nowhere to go with it, but that's padded out with mugging and repetitiveness. There are some funny bits -- God being a Wilt Chamberlain fan, for example, and using his power to help Wilt score 100 points and sink 28 of 32 free throws in an untelevised NBA game in Hershey, Pa., in 1962. But the bits aren't enough to carry the plot beyond what should have been Woody Allen short-story length. And the dialogue is banal!

Thank you, Deepak!

This book is rich with insights that confirm what science is discovering and ancient wisdom has always known, namely that there is much more to the "physical" body than what you see. More and more, we are hearing that the body is a flow of energy and intelligence, that it has no boundaries, and that the body and the mind are inseparably connected. In this amazing book, Deepak doesn't just describe that process, he tells you the part you play in making the body what it is. He explains how your state of mind affects every part of your body. Then he shows you how to tune your mind to a subtler level, and he tells you who the "you" is that is doing all this.
For so long, we have thought of ourselves as a body that is conscious, but we have had the formula backwards. We are spiritual beings who are using a physical body for this space/time experience. Learning to think of ourselves as eternal beings opens us to what Deepak calls our immortal nature, whose home is the field of consciousness that is creating all that we see and know. Deepak tells us that when we come in contact consciously with that field, as we can do during meditation, "the brain mirrors it and the body has no choice but to shift. When that shift happens, the soul expands beyond its normal boundaries," and we begin to experience the wholeness that is the very substratum of Who and What We Are.
Having said all that, Deepak then goes on to explain what life can be like when we connect consciously to the infinite aspect of our being. That connection changes our behavior even at the level of the soul, and when the soul changes, "the whole dance changes with you."
Connecting with life at this deep level teaches us experientially that we are not just this body. We are unbounded awareness, and at that level, to quote Deepak, "You are enough. You are everything you need."
How to live at this level? He talks about that, too. "Giving opens the flow," he tells us. "There will always be enough of what your soul has to give, so trust the flow. Look for the larger picture. Think on the cosmic scale. And always seek the highest outcome. The deeper your awareness, the richer your creation."
In other words, we create ourselves - and our life - at the level of the soul. And just in case you hadn't thought of this yet, he concludes by telling us not only that the soul is our sacred body, "it is the junction point between infinity and the relative world."
The mind can only take us so far, but "where thinking fails, consciousness is free to go on. The process of reinventing the body and resurrecting the soul is a journey, and the journey never ends."
This is an amazing piece of work. I've read it three times already, and no doubt will be referring to it for a long time. If you are looking for a way to expand your boundaries and get in touch with your deeper self, then this book definitely is for you.

Not as Good as Expected

This book starts out with a few great concepts: Energy, Awareness, Conditioning and shows how you can use these to avoid preconceived ways of thinking and enhance your way of life. Somewhere after that the book loses its way and wanders all over the place. I often asked how we got onto said topic and what the main point was. The testimonials from clients, friends, etc seem contrived and are flat and boring. Also, the various lists in the book contain nothing more than what most of already know is good for us. At one point I felt like I was reading an old-fashioned astrology book.

Still, I respect Deepak Chopra's larger message of exploring new ways of thinking. This book just seemed more like an average self-help book instead of something enlightening.

A book about healing yourself in every way.

This was a good read for me. Quite eye opening...At the time I was going through a transformation in my life. Jaded by Dogmatic religions and feeling like Frederich Nietche this gave me a new sort of approach to bettering myself mentally physically as well as spiritually . I now know how to heal my body mind and spirit and keep myself on a better path. Truly inspirational book... made me begin researching a lot of holistic medicine, get away from prescription drugs. Distancing myself from toxic people and situations. And even meditating or simply taking a 10 minute rest from the rat-race really does amazing things. (slight personal digression there ;)
Deepak goes at life from every conceivable angle (Sciences of Psychology and Medicine as well as spirituality {more so than typical religious dogma} Keep an open mind when you read this one and you can get a lot from it.

About the Author
My first experience with test indicators was in the form of a family project. The Swiss manufacturer of the popular Alina 88 test indicator delivered parts to us on a weekly basis. It was our task to assemble them and this we did around the kitchen table on weekends during the sultry Long Island summers of the early 1960s. It was my task to install and adjust the hair springs. My mother assembled the bezels and crystals. My brothers had levers and reversing clips to mount. My father carefully finished the indicators and calibrated them. Ironically, the Alina 88 was quite similar to the Starrett Last Word indicator, an indicator which has not changed in any substantial way over the ensuing decades. The Alina 88 is now long gone but the Last Word remains a favorite among hobbyists and pros alike. I cannot begin to count the number of these gages which I have repaired in the past 35 years but I certainly feel justified in claiming to know more than a few tricks of the trade. With this volume I am pleased to offer my experiences to anyone wishing to tackle a repair of this American classic.

About the Author
Xiaolong Wu is Associate Professor of Art History at Hanover College, Indiana. He received his BA in Chinese archaeology from Beijing University and his PhD in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh. His research interest focuses on the material culture of late Bronze Age China and its interactions with the Eurasian Steppe, and issues related to ethnicity, hybridity, agency, and political power.

A promising find!

Natural therapy is something I’m always looking to read on, as much as possible. There have been so many reasons in my life that have caused me to want to learn the secrets of natural healing. True healing. Cure. Not just “treatment” and “alleviation of symptoms” as offered by the modern-day doctors. My cousin has cystic fibrosis, my father is a patient of CKD. It’s so difficult sometimes to see some of my loved ones suffer from diseases that are not curable by modern medical techniques.

This book is very interesting and full of information on the subject of natural healing. Short, but gives a complete overview of naturopathy and explains how natural healing is actually possible. Numerous methods of natural healing have been described and a whole chapter is dedicated to a list and description of 9 foods that have a role in healing chronic diseases! Very helpful indeed. A list of accredited naturopathic medical schools has also been included.

I think it’s a great book for anyone who’s looking for answers that conventional medicine does not provide. Highly recommended!

Take Charge of Your Health

Modern medicine is based on medication and surgery. Both are pretty scary prospects and may not be the best solutions, but that's where many doctors will take you.

There is an alternative, though, and that is the natural approach to healing. In this book, the author gives a good overview of natural medicine and a little of its history. He discusses a style of healing that can be less expensive, less invasive, and more proactive. Live more natural and you can avoid a lot of health problems. The book is well organized and easy to follow. It does not go into great depth, but does a good job of covering all the basics from spices and herbs you can use on a regular basis, to different types of natural therapies.

All in all, a solid introduction to the subject.

A nice outline for a future book

I got this as my monthly Prime free book. I am so glad I didn't pay for this. It's a few pages that feel like something the author might present as an outline to a publisher. There's no information here whatsoever. I was interested in the healing diet, but wherever it is, it's not here. A lot of these tiny books remind me of college term papers, but this doesn't contain as much information as the average term paper I wrote.
