Nasty Review

This book is a major contribution to Bigfoot/Sasquatch research. I find it
incredibly engrossing, interesting, and full of fascinating information concerning the
Clackamas River drainage. It is full of “first seen in literature events.” It is the
first attempt that I’m aware of where there was an extensive study of a geographical
region. Broken into six major areas that are intensively investigated from a wealth of
field notes that Beelart has kept over the years. Other firsts I note are: a Sasquatch
playground, a walking stick, licking stones, Devil’s trails, and Bigfoot watch towers,
along with Bigfoot in the trees, salmon clubbing, vocal wood-on-wood and chest beating
comments.
One of my prior complaints about Bigfoot research was the lack of reference to
behavior. Yet, in this volume I find reference to most of the Bigfoot behaviorisms I’m
aware of including a long appendix reference to behaviorisms. Kudos.
Readers will find the text easy reading, well edited, and with references to all the
Bigfoot activity including “maybes” in that particular area. Also, with a lot of humor
Beelart has numerous asides that describe wildlife, lore or local history, like:
approaches by cougars or viewing the Perseid meteor shower. How did Tarzan Springs get
its name? Read OBH and see! And even some supernatural events are touched on.
There are numerous photos and maps; many by Sharon Beelart. Beelart has an
extensive reference system explaining where and in detail about each site mentioned with
GPS references. Perhaps my only complaint…too many site references disturb the smooth
reading of the text. There is a long appendix and index of topics by reference number.
I fondly recall my own trips into the watershed, especially with Joe and we enjoyed
numerous views past Indian Henry Fst. Camp where a large chunk of petrified wood fell on
the roadway. OBH is the culmination of 21 years research of the Bigfoot phenomena.
Readers do themselves an injustice if they don’t acquire a copy of OBH soon.

The Highway to Bigfoot Heaven!

If you want to take an armchair trip through some of the most beautiful and wild areas in the Pacific Northwest, read Joe Beelart and Cliff Olson’s book. If you want to encounter cougars and other four-footed creatures along the way, read this book. If you want to meet interesting and eccentric people along the way, read this book. If, also, your interests run to the even rarer and more exotic two-footed creatures that inhabit this “highway”, then you’re all set to ride when you read this book. These Forest Giants are, after all, the main reason you will read it.
Good books about Sasquatch usually include stories of contact and interaction. This alone, however, doesn’t make for a “best” book. What these authors have brought to the shelf of “best” books is their detailed knowledge of this river and its mountains and back country. They know geology. They know forestry. They know the seasonal cycles of forest, land, climate, animals, and fish. They know the history of the river as it pertains to electrical power generation, fishing, logging, and a bit of tourism. They know a little bit about the USFS, and vice versa. They know each specific location almost like they know their own back yards. They share all this with the reader with a cautious and possibly misplaced trust that the knowledge they share will not be abused.
For this book, the authors developed a detailed and unusual reference system. Initially daunting for the general reader, all this referencing serves the purpose of, well, reference. It’s a great tool for return and reread. It’s a great aid for visiting the locations in person, or with GPS type software on one’s electronic device. The reader gets used to it. Bigfoot research benefits from systematicians like these who also love the campfire and the trail. If, on the other hand, you’re not drawn to systematics and exactitude, then be sure to read Area 52 in the book.
Author Beelart’s “voice” is one to listen to. He has developed a language, a style, and a turn of phrase that is unique – humorous at times, didactic when necessary, and full of love for mountain zephyrs and the stars of the zodiac circling the after-midnight Cascades. No other wordsmith could come up with observations like these: “By selling their cloaking techniques to the military, our Bigfoot Friends could become billionaires and buy their own gated forests.” Or, this: "My friend was driving up the Clackamas with his girlfriend to stoke the embers of affection.”
This book is on my “best” Bigfoot books bookshelf. If it isn’t on yours, the only reason I can think of is that it is laying open beside you in your car as you explore the Oregon Bigfoot Highway in person.

Take a lovely adventurous drive, and/or campout... even if the weather is bad!

Granted I approached this reading with a modicum of personal bias. Due to my friendship with it’s authors, and by being mentioned in the book. I have received no compensation for this review (nor the countless hours I’ve listened to my friend’s ministrations over its publication.) Regardless, I have read a couple dozen books on this phenomena, and can rate it without compromising my integrity, one of the best. Not scientifically dry; nor filled with wild speculation and folksy colloquialisms. I warn you now, it’s hard to take a break from… you won’t need a bookmark.
In the style of the other best reads on the subject, Joe and Cliff lay the factual reporting of their years of investigation before you. So you can catch-up on, and decide for yourself what has been going on in the arboreal wilderness behind your back. While keeping personal encounters to a minimum Joe and Cliff ran down hundreds of leads from mostly unwilling witnesses who were reluctant or frightened to formally report their experiences in public. Culling out only the best for this book of never before published testimonies.
While a must for the ever growing Bigfoot tracking community. Everyone will get the thrill of adventure by reading along with these guys pursuit of their passion. The authors took great care in providing more a travelogue of this scenic two hour drive than a story of malicious marauding monsters. Never the less, the revelations within… might affect your sleep.
