Knowing further on Scarpa's life-work

Overall it's an a-okay edition, that gives a global idea of Carlo Scarpa's scope of work during his career. But if you're looking for extensive material in Scarpa's works you'll be a little disappointed: lacking of drawings (plans/sections, diagrams) that help to understand the projects, and a lack of original sketches from Scarpa himself. Another disappointment is the lack of photographic content for the Olivetti Store/Offices, or a lack of photographs of details from the iconic Brion tomb. With all this said, due its relation affordable price/ good quality print, I advise in favor of purchasing the book to all Scarpa enthusiasts.

Inspirational book on Scarpa's work

A book can't be all things to all people. Some prior reviews criticize this book for one thing or another, but for me it is just what I was looking for. Full of large, beautiful photographs of many of Scarpa's projects, each combined with a quick history and/or walk-through.
If you want more text, get McCarter's book. If you want great photographs, get Beltramini's book, or Taschen's book. Or do as I did and get them all.

Very helpful for a lost mom....

My 6 year old son came home asking for "Backer-Guns" and I had no clue what he was talking about. Once we figured out what they were, I still didn't understand the planets and story, so we purchased this book and the first DVD. Both have been thoroughly enjoyed, and I read the book together with my son and 4 year old daughter. The book has sections on the human characters, planets of Vestroia, Bakugan warrior types, and "best battles" from the show. The pages showing the different warrior types were very helpful to me for identifying the Bakugan in our collection. The "best battles" are nice because they are "story-like" to read together, and put the rest in context. We saved several dollars by buying it used.

This second volume in the author's life of Jesus (Vol. 1, LJ 10/15/91) discusses his ministry, focusing on his miracles, healings, other wonder works, and teachings concerning the coming kingdom of God. Meier, a Catholic priest and teacher at Catholic University of America, stresses Jesus' great dependence on the teachings and thought of John the Baptist. Meier continues to expound his thesis that Jesus was a marginal Jew in a marginal eastern Mediterranean society during the first century. Meier's extremely long, dense text, heavily documented by many footnotes, is hard going indeed and will appeal mainly to scholars in the field. All collections owning Volume 1, however, should buy this continuation. Two other recent lives of Jesus are easier to grasp by general readers and would appeal more to the public at large: John D. Crossan's The Historical Jesus (LJ 2/1/92) and A.N. Wilson's Jesus: A Life (LJ 9/15/92).

This second volume of Meier's magisterial attempt to create a ``consensus document'' about the historical Jesus on which scholars of all faiths could agree makes some tantalizing assertions about Jesus' public ministry. Meier (New Testament Studies/Catholic Univ.) divides this successor to Volume One (subtitled The Roots of the Problem and the Person, 1991) into three parts: an examination of the pervasive effect on Jesus of the life and career of John the Baptist, whom Meier calls Jesus' ``mentor''; an analysis of the centrality to Jesus' message of the concept of the ``kingdom of God''; and an extended discussion of the historicity of Gospel accounts of Jesus' miracles, healings, and exorcisms. Meier uses John the Baptist's career as his starting point, asserting that Jesus not only accepted baptism from the charismatic preacher at the outset of his public ministry, but he also adopted John's themes of the imminent judgment of sinners and the need for reform and repentance as integral parts of his own message. Unlike John, however, Jesus emphasized the coming of the kingdom of God, which he represented as both an approaching eschatological event and, in a mystical way, as being present in the actions, beliefs, and fellowship of the community of believers: ``The kingdom of God is in your midst'' (Luke 17:21). Meier argues that Jesus' preaching of the heavenly kingdom was most manifest in his miraculous works, which Meier inventories in painstaking detail, dividing them into exorcisms, healings, raising of the dead, and ``nature'' miracles, such as walking on water and cursing the fruitless fig tree and causing it to wither. The author concludes that the power of Jesus' message arose from his actual historical fame as a miracle worker as well as from his moral teachings. Jesus of History, A Critical, Scholarly Examination

Why even bother trying to learn about the historical Jesus? Why try where so many others have given up or gotten bogged down in disagreement? In his great, academic book, Fr. John Meier recalls Plato: "The unexamined life is not worth living." For the Christian, some things are sacred, but nothing about Yeshu the "marginal" Jew is forbidden in a proper historical examination. And Fr. Meier does just that in this, the first of three volumes. Was Jesus an illegitimate child? Could he read? Did he have brothers and sisters? Why was he "marginal"? What was his early life like?

The scarcity of the evidence can at first be discouraging, but Fr. Meier takes us through the centuries of scholarship and the best available modern evidence to paint us a picture of the young son of Mary and Joseph. Faithless and faithful alike may be unhappy with Meier's conclusions, but his arguments are well-researched and presented. You can read the text and skip the chapter endnotes for a decent academic presentation, or you can delve into the notes and branch off into the cutting edge discussion on the Jesus of history.

Most interesting to me was the fact that the book bears the Imprimatur of Bp. Sheridan, but does not have the Nihil Obstat, or the approval of the Church's censor office. Normally the two go together. Fr. Meier's message may not be popular among modern Christians, Catholic or otherwise, but he's not been censured either. It's a testimony the the impeccability of his scholarship and the validity of his message: The historical Jesus is not the Jesus of faith. He is also not the "real" Jesus, irrecoverable now after 2000 years. He is simply the Jesus that we can recover from "purely historical sources and arguments."

A superb introduction to the series

This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in the quest for the historical Jesus. This book is an introduction to Meier's series: A Marginal Jew. Meier's methodology is clear and well thought out. Meier takes the historical methodology formulated in the first chapters of the book and then applies them to the early life of Jesus (to set the reader up for Volume 2 which deals with Jesus' public ministry). Meier also examines the sources that historians deal with when constructing the historical Jesus. I'd give this book more than 5 stars if I could.

Profound scholarship made accessible

Meier takes you as far as you can go into historical Jesus research without knowing Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. The book summarizes and evaluates the current state of research using a well-defined methodology and comes to its own conclusions. It's not easy to read: footnotes are about equal to text, and the print is uncomfortably small, but if you really want to know as much as you can about Jesus, you need this book.

Intense Read

This is not like the two previous books. This is a stand alone book, I hope this Author has more storyline for the characters in this book. I loved this book, it's intense, sexy story keeps you reading until the end I couldn't put it down. Love how the characters interact with each other. I will continue to read books by this Great Author

I want a Viktor....!!

First off, I need to say this book surprised the hell out of me. When I first signed up for this the blurb grabbed me straight away. I loved the characters in this book.

When we first meet Ava she’s 18 and in senior year of high school, her best friend Casey is a b****h and she’s starting to realise this. Ava decides to go to a party with her boyfriend Malcolm and she hands her v-card over on a silver platter! But with those come consequences…in the form of a pregnancy. Malcolm decides it’s all too much and gets into trouble and moves away, he keeps it from Ava and leaves her locked out and 8 months pregnant. But then comes along Viktor. Viktor helps her and is there all the way through. Ava does what she needs to do to survive, and to give her daughter Gabbi a stable and loving life and tries her hardest to keep the walls around her heart firmly in place. But bit by bit Vik breaks them down.
Okay, from the first time I met Malcolm I thought he was a total douche.. and I was right! He needed a throat punch for the way he treats Ava, and his mother, don’t even get me started. Viktor, on the other hand, I loved that man and little Gabbi was so adorable. Ava I loved her character and her spirit, she started like any other 18 year old, not sure of herself and the ways of the world, not sure who to trust, but Vik was there all the way through, she fought her feelings for him so she could provide a stable life for her daughter and to not risk her heart again.

This book had me shouting, swooning, tearing up and completely falling in love with an adorable little girl and a strong single mother and of course a gorgeous Russian named Viktor just topped off the whole package…when he speaks to her in Russian, OMG I melted! I was rooting for Viktor and Ava all the way through.
This book was written so well and it flowed beautifully, it was told from Ava’s POV but the epilogue is told from Viktor’s POV which was just amazing I loved it! I'll definitely be on the lookout for more books from this author. Brie kept my interest all the way through!

This book is a story of a strength, trust and a need to survive and all importantly, love! This book is a definite must read and needs to be added to your tbr today!

This is not my first Brie Paisley book but I think its her best to date.The story line is emotional and full of drama, when I first started reading it I must confess I thought it sounded YA but once Viktor came into the story boy did he turn the heat up!! I loved him, sexy cocky, demanding and Russian but is he too good to be true? He showed Ava how much he cared on so many levels though sometimes I found her a bit annoying, the more I read the more I warmed to her. Essentially this is the story of two people finding love but its also about family, forgiveness and revenge. All in all I loved it the story line was strong passionate and emotional and for me Viktor stole the show!

Ava had her life mapped out, she taught ballet, had a gorgeous boyfriend life was good until one night a drunken mistake took it all away from her, left pregnant and alone after Malcolm walks away Ava is facing life as a single mother. Then in walks Viktor; he helps her when she's in labour, he sweeps into her life and into her heart providing her with much needed support and a job. Viktor offers her the chance to start over and re invent herself. He owns a club and he has strict rules, he doesn’t get involved with staff there's no mixing business with pleasure. He offers Ava a contract which states there would be nothing between them but with feelings growing on both sides how long can they both stick to his rules? Viktor is keeping secrets,he has been hurt and vowed never to let anyone close to him again,the past is still causing problems for Ava and both have issues with trust can they build a relationship together?

Victor S Yeung, MSc (MIT), CFA, CIMA Adv Dip MA, MHKSI, is the Chief Investment Officer of Admiral Investment Limited, where he oversees the firm's operations. Before Admiral, Mr. Yeung was Managing Director, Asia Pacific Securities for LaSalle Investment Management, where he helped manage the Asia Pacific portion of the USD 10 billion Global Real Estate Securities program. Before LaSalle, Mr. Yeung was a research analyst with Morgan Stanley and a risk underwriter with American Express. From the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. Yeung received three bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Management, and Political Science and a master's degree in Political Science. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds the Advanced Diploma in Managerial Accounting with the Chartered Institute of Management Accounting. Mr. Yeung is a frequent guest speaker at real estate conferences around the region, and he lectures for two industry organizations: Asia Pacific Real Estate Association and Hong Kong Securities Institute. He is a co-author of Transforming Real Estate Finance: A CMBS Primer (2005 and 2006 editions) and the author of Admiral's Field Notes: REITs and Rental Real Estate.

I found this book to be more of a reference guide, for collegiate and graduate students. It is not a book to read through. It is a book where you can go to a specific chapter, and use it as back-up material.

Filled with valuable tools to help people resolve conflict

While there are many books covering the topic of conflict resolution, Kenneth Cloke and Joan Goldsmith's work in this book is one of the best. There are many components to conflict and this book provides a host of tools and insights that will help the reader learn to successfully work with conflict. This book covers many aspects of conflict including the valuable skills of learning to "separate what matters from what gets in the way", "explore resistance" along with MANY other techniques!

Every page is filled with valuable information, tools and thought provoking content! A great resource to have on your bookshelf.

There are so many different kinds of conflicts at work that it's probably impossible to write a book with scenarios that resonate with everyone. It's also impossible to resolve all conflicts at work, so when reading books like this I try to figure out whether there's enough new information that I can apply to my job. After reading the book, I feel it was worth my time.
