Modern international business has its origins in the overseas trade of the Middle Ages. Of the various communities active in trade in the Islamic countries at that time, records of only the Jewish community survive. Thousands of documents were preserved in the Cairo Geniza, a lumber room attached to the synagogue where discarded writings containing the name of God were deposited to preserve them from desecration. From them Professor Goitein has selected eighty letters that provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of the medieval Jewish traders.

As the letters vividly illustrate, international trade depended on a network of personal relationships and mutual confidence. Organization was largely through partnerships, based usually on ties of common religion but often reinforced by family connections. Sometimes the partners of Jews were Christians or Muslims, and the letters show these merchants working together in greater harmony than has been thought, even in partnerships that lasted through generations. The services rendered to a friend or partner and those expected from him were great, and the book opens with an angry letter from a merchant who believed he had been let down by his friend.

The life of a trader was full of dangers, as the letter describing a shipwreck illustrates, and put great strain on personal relationships. One of the most moving letters is that written to his wife by a man absent in India for many years while endeavoring to make the family's fortunes. Although never ceasing to love her and longing to be with her, he offers to divorce her if she feels she can wait for him no longer. A decisive event in the life of the great Jewish philosopher, Moses Maimonides, was the death of his brother David, who drowned in the Indian Ocean. Printed here is the last letter David wrote, describing his safe crossing of the desert and announcing his intention to go on to India, against his brother's instructions.

Professor Goitein has provided an introduction and notes for each letter, and a general introduction describing the social and spiritual world of the writers, the organization of overseas trade in the Middle Ages, and the goods traded. The letters demonstrate that although it reached from Spain to India, the traders' world was a cohesive one through which these men could move freely and always feel at home.

Life behind a curtain drawn by the passage of a millenium

This is a translation of eighty letters by both substantial and lesser businessmen, describing conditions, inventory and some personal matters during a two hundred year period starting around 1000 CE. Recovered in Cairo in the late nineteenth century as part of a large trove of mainly religious documents, they are the most basic sort of source material that an historian might wish for. Covering the wide geographic range of the Islamic world from Spain to Indonesia, they present brief pictures, blurry or clear, of the preoccupations, experiences, and material aspects of a world otherwise lost to us.

Although lacking in the novelistic flair that a historical interpretation at its best would provide, these letters provide vivid realities. Goitein's closely related and much longer A MEDITERRANEAN SOCIETY fills in the background with greater narrative continuity.

It's competently written but I don't see much to distinguish it from the plethora of other basic books on Python. One would hope there might be some interesting code implementing some interesting algorithms but mostly it's just explaining the basic features of the language.

Some puzzling topic choices

This book inexplicably has a chapter on arrays but little info. on lists. It should be the other way around, as arrays are rarely used in Python, instead lists are normally used. Also it has a chapter on date and time functions, which are not a basic part of Python. Both of these chapters can be skipped.

Iwan 'e1' Rahabok

Iwan 'e1' Rahabok was the first VMware SE for strategic accounts in ASEAN. Joining VMware in 2008 from Sun Microsystems, he has seen how enterprises adopt virtualization firsthand, reaping the benefits while overcoming the challenges. It is a journey that is still going on and the book reflects a subset of that undertaking. Globally, he was one of the first to achieve the VCAP-DCD certification and has since helped others to achieve the same with the help of his participation in the community. He started the user community in ASEAN, and today the group is one of the largest VMware communities on Facebook. He is a member of VMware CTO Ambassadors, representing ASEAN region at the global level and the product team and CTO office to the ASEAN customers. He is a vExpert 2013 and vExpert 2014 and has been helping others to achieve this global recognition for their contribution to the VMware community. He graduated from Bond University, Australia, with a degree in IT in 1994.

Recommended for diverse roles in the SDDC

The book excels the treatment of topics for a diverse audience, discussing topics from the fundamental differences between the physical and virtual data center physical (as a CxO would understand it) to the deep-dive into a subject whose documentation has been remarkably little in the past : vROPs metrics definitios and its relationship with vCenter. So a comprehensive approach that focuses on important and often overlooked issues, makes the book a valuable resource.
As if the contributions mentioned were not enough, Iwan Rahabok adds a chapter on a topic that is usually treated very operatively but has lacked the component of planning and design: creating vROPs custom dashboards that, altough implies require Advanced or Enterprise Licensing, is a feature that definitely exploits a lot of the vROPs potential for preventive monitoring and visualization of key indicators of the virtual data center.

Awesome vSphere Performance Analysis Deep Dive for vCenter and vROps but no Super Metric formulas.

This is a great starter book for anyone who wants to take a deep dive into performance analysis in vSphere environments. It explains the various nuances of performance in great detail and provides a lot of useful examples to help the reader understand virtualization specific concepts. I enjoyed the comparisons the author provides on what metrics you get from vCenter versus vROps, how they differ, and what to pay attention to. The only shortcoming I can see is that the author does not provide the formulas for the Super Metrics he recommends you create in vROps. However, he does go into some Super Metrics and related topics on his blog. Enjoy!

The Book vSphere Pros Have Needed For YEARS

I have been a VMware employee for over seven years, working in the area of Performance and Capacity Management. I can say without reservation this is the book that VMware professionals have been awaiting for years. There is a huge need for clarity with these issues, in addition to many misconceptions and confusion. Iwan has done a great service to clarify these topics. If you are operating vSphere, this is a must read even if you are not using vRealize Operations (or it's predecessor, vCOPs). The principles of managing performance and capacity in virtualized environments alone are worth the purchase price of this book. Well done Iwan!!!
