Indians of Southern Maryland, by Rebecca Seib, Helen C. Rountree

Here at last is the story of Southern Maryland’s Native people, from the end of the Ice Age to the present. Intended for a general audience, it explains how they have been adapting to changing conditions―both climatic and human―for all of that time in a way that is jargon-free and readable. The authors, cultural anthropologists with long experience of modern Indian people, convincingly demonstrate that all through their history, Native people have behaved like rational adults, contrary to the common stereotype of Indians. Moreover, in the very early Contact Period at least, some English settlers respected them accordingly. Unfortunately, although they never went to war against the English, they were driven nearly out of existence. Yet some of them refused to leave, and, adapting yet again to a changing world, their descendants are living successfully in Indian communities today.

Invaluable resource to anyone seeking to better understand the Native Americans in our area who are typically lost in the black/whiteness of our racial of the racial story. A must read for any one who lives in Southern Maryland and in Virginia where early misguided efforts to classify Native Americans and African Americans as "colored" in a white dominated society virtually destroyed the trail of Native American people.

This book has two radically different sections. The first part (up to page 132) is a documented history of the historical Piscataway tribe until they left Maryland around 1705. The second part is much shorter and is only about 50 pages. So 132 pages for less than 100 years and 50 pages for 300 years, which suggests that the research was lacking. Nothing connects the two parts other than that the authors assume some free families of color were Piscataways who stayed behind. However, there is no evidence that any of the families discussed were Indians. They called themselves Wesorts, rather than Piscataways. Wesorts denied descent from African Americans and married their relatives because they valued "pale skin over darker skin" (171). Anyone familiar with Jeff Foxworthy jokes would understand that marrying your cousin and denying black ancestry in a racist world is not proof of being an Indian. The authors drop oodles of genealogical relationships and land records, but no actual evidence. The statement that "it is generally useless to look for an 'Indian' label" (146), suggests that the authors were aware that there is no evidence for Indian ancestry. Seib indicates that she was hired by one of the Piscataway tribes, so she was trying to spin straw into gold. No Piscataway group has federal recognition and based on this book will never be able to obtain it. Reminds me of the people who tell me about their Cherokee great-grandmother.
