Through the Voice in the Fire and the Flames We Carry On
By DaveWire
A marked improvement over the previous volume, now featuring coherent storyline! This volume comes about as close to Hellblazer as the series gets, and while perhaps I really shouldn't compare New 52's Constantine to Hellblazer, it's just so hard not to. Firstly, we get some terrific visuals in this one as the arc for the Cult of the Cold Flame started way back in Justice League Dark draws to a close. John becomes a globetrotting agent for the Cult all the while working the ultimate con against them. (At the time of this review, there is only one issue of Constantine remaining and given how all the issues following this volume have ran, I find it hard to see how the Cult will make its big comeback for the finale. I could be wrong, but perhaps the Cult story, while clearly not finished, was merely forgotten?)
The fourth chapter, "The Gestalt", is perhaps my favorite of the series, featuring werewolves in Teutoburg Forest. The creepy atmosphere delivered as John is both hunted by and hunting the wolf-men is pretty fantastic. At the other end of the spectrum, the titular chapter, "The Voice in the Flames", is probably my least favorite of the book and that's mainly due to an unwanted change in Constantine's backstory, mainly in dealing with his parents and how he came upon the dark arts.
John continues to be a bit overly flashy in this series, but in this volume he's less so and that works for the benefit of this book. This is probably the most solid volume of the series, not being bogged down by crossovers and tie-ins with other events as volumes 1 & 2 (and the upcoming volume 4) are. Even the Futures End chapter, while only tangentially part of an event is really just a good stand-alone tale that works to set up the next volume.
All in all, I'd say this is the best Constantine has had to offer thus far and while a far cry from the days of Alan Moore, Jamie Delano, and Garth Ennis, every once in a while, Ray Fawkes offers a hint of glory.

An okay volume, if you're also reading Justice Leage Dark
By Tim Crowder
I really wanted to give this 2.5 stars but 3 works just as well. Like Constantine Vol. 2 was, this volume was all over the place and it seems to assume that you're also reading Justice League Dark, as well as some other series. It makes it very confusing when they're jumping around, skipping over plot points, and not really telling one unified story. I would only recommend this to someone who is also going to read Justice League Dark and its related series.
